 BT Global Challenge

The BT Global Challenge Around the World race started yesterday in Southampton England.  The BT Global challenge is unique for two primary reasons.  One, the crew are amateur sailors who pay to train for and sail the race. Two, the fleet sails against the prevailing winds and currents from east to west.

Leg 1 for the 12 boat fleet will be 3200 miles to Boston Mass.  The 216 crew will fight the gulf stream, and possible fall storms during this 2 week long leg.

The start was hampered by light winds and strong tides.  Winds were so light the fleet had to anchor to avoid losing distance.

Sailing Daily will provide periodic coverage of the BT Global Challenge as the fleet sails 26,000 miles against the prevailing winds.
