Melges 24 Worlds Day 1

The Melges 24 class is a haven for well known and world class sailors.  Although he certainly looks world class, Giorgio Zuccoli of Italy is not well known.  He  may soon be well known as he is in the lead after 2 races on day 1.

Racing on day 1 was initially postponed for an hour.  However, once wind was found it stayed around.  Race 1 started in 7 knots and by the end of race 2 the fleet had 18-20 knots.

Race 1 saw Zucolli and his team get off fast with a bullet.  2nd was California sailmaker Dave Ullman and 3rd was Buddy Melges.  Brian Porter who had been on form in the Pre Worlds got his throwout race over finishing 35th.

Porter, came back strong in race 2 finishing 1st.  2nd was defending champion Vince Brun.  3rd was Dave Clark's team from Great Britain.

This put Zuccoli 1st, with Vince Brun 3 points back in 2nd.  3rd place is a tie at 11 points between Dave Ullman and Tony Wattson.

Racing continues through Sunday.
