Today's Sailing NewsMatch Racing Worlds Day 1Yesterday was day 1 of the 2000 Match Racing World Championships. Venue was Split Croatia and the Adriatic Sea. The contest for the match racing world championship is one of sailings major inshore regattas along with the Olympics, Key West Race Week, the America's Cup and The Admirals Cup. Day 1 saw a total of 32 matches sailed. Winds blew up to 24 knots. The only skipper emerging without a loss was Dean Barker of New Zealand. Despite having to continue negotiations to retain America's Cup crew Barker focused well enough. Also with 5 wins was Frenchman Bertrand Pace. Dane Sten Mohr also won 5 races. However, he was penalized .5 points for an in race collision and so has 4.5 points. 3 skippers won 3 races. They are Brit Andy Green, Peter Gilmour under Japanese colors and Frenchman Francois Brenac. Brenac collided with Bertrand pace and was docked half a point, so he has 3 wins, but only 2.5 points. At two wins are Magnus Holmberg, Luc Pillot and Tomislav Basic. 3 Danes round out the results: Jesper Radich and Jesper Bank with 1 win and Jes Gram Hansen yet to win. This leaves the first of two round robins partially completed. Each team will sail a total of 22 races with the top 4 finishers heading to the semis. For now at least half the 12 skippers seem to have a chance at advancing. Muskegon J 24 Spring Regatta
