Worrell 1000 Day 1The annual south to north dash up the Atlantic coast via beach catamaran has begun. This year the 2 person teams are literally all in the same boat- the Inter 20. The 80.7 mile Leg 1 from Fort Lauderdale to Jensen Beach Florida was a fast one. As with many other Worrell legs 5 time race winner Randy Smyth came 1st. 2nd by only 42 seconds were Dutchmen Gerard Loos and Mrsucha Heemskerk. 3rd were Brett Dryland and Rod Waterhouse only another 8 seconds back. At least for 1 days the one design concept has brought close exciting racing. Smyth's with Mark Strube as crew posted a leg 1 winning time of 4 hours 39 minutes and 5 seconds, for an average speed of 17.20 knots. The high speeds were not the only new of Leg 1. A 30 knot squall hit the fleet causing several capsizes and some injuries to crews. This morning sees leg 2 a 79 mile sail to Coca Beach. (A)round (T)he (W)orld (O)f
