(C)update: Race 2 - Tuesday 21 February

Check this page often and hit reload for live updates and analysis of Race 2 of the Ameirca's Cup 30th edition.  In Race 2 it is Italy that must answer the questions, after New Zealand showed in race 1 there is no reason to doubt their level of performance.

1819 Light winds from the South raise the possibility of postponment.  Easterly winds are forecast for the evening in New Zealand and racing may wait until these fill in.

1902 15-20 knots of wind with lumpy seas.  A different sailing mode than race 1.

1908 Race committe is resetting the course in reaction to a shift.  Start will be a litle later than the scheduled 1915.

1931 The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron is still laying the race course.

1946 Starting sequence underway.  About one half hour after the scheduled time.

1955 An active pre start, much higher pace than race 1.

The key was New Zealand's negation of Prada's starboard tack edge.  A fast turn allowed NZL to escape any negative effects of the dial up.

1957 NZL again on the right.  Simon Daubney chirps and trims.

1958 NZL leebows Italy.  They are ahead and want to retain the right side of the course.

2001 Left shift helps Prada.

2004 Prada tacks and heads left.  NZL covers.

2006 Injured man on Prada.  Addtionally a man over the side clearing something fromt the keel.

2009 Then man dives to attempt to clear keel.   Meanwhile boat is stopped.  It was the mid bowman who was hurt.  He literally is wearing a turban of bandages.

2011 The Mid Bowman was taken off via tender.   Prada now several minutes behind, still uncertaity if keel is free of obstruction.

2015 At this point New Zealand's lead is safe.   Prada will need drastic breaks to make it a contest.

2027 At mark 1 New Zealand has a safe 2:19 lead.   Prada botches spinnaker set as kit comes out of bag early.

2030 Winds looks to be down as boats jybe downwind.

2035 Uneventful leg.  Wind dropping and shifty.   Italy can always hope for a fortuitous shift in a dying breeze.

2044 @ 2nd Mark NZL 60 + 1:55

2055 Long starboard tack for both boats on the 2nd beat.

2108 1:49 lead for NZL 60.  Both boats set symetrical spinnakers.

2127 Lead is 1:59 after 2nd downwind leg.  New Zealand looks smooth.

2148 NZL enters last leg with big lead of 2:26.
