One Design 35 Nationals

The weekend saw as close a battle as you can have for the One Design
35 national championship.  After 3 days of racing and 7 races two boats
from the host city were only a single point apart. 

Windquest had the best first day of any of the 23 boats posting scores of
3rd, and 3rd.  Extreme was not a nimble on day 1 which featured an
under 10 knot westerly.  Extreme's 1st 2 races were: 14th and 2nd.  After
Friday Windquest led by 10 points.

Saturday saw 3 races sailed again in light conditions from the west.  In
race 1 on Saturday Extreme had her worst finish a 19th.  Windquest
posted a 9th and led by 20 points.  Race 4 saw the beginning of Extreme's
run up the standings table with a 2nd to Windquest's 13th, cutting the
deficit to 9 points.  Saturday's final race again saw Extreme sail well
finishing 3rd, while Windquest was 8th.  Another 5 points came off Windquest's lead which was now only 5 points.

In fact after Saturday's racing yet another Holland boat was the regatta
leader.  Heartbreaker had a 5 point lead over Windquest.

Sunday's racing decided the order of podium placing.   Rather than the
light westerlies of the 1st days, a Force 3-5 northeasterly blew in.  Especially downwind speeds increased.

Extreme finished off a remarkable comeback with finishes of 3rd and 1st.
Windquest posted a first race 7th.  This meant going into the 7th race,
Extreme and Windquest were level pegged at 40 points.   Heartbreaker
posted an 11th that put her 2 points back.

The 7th race fittingly saw Extreme win the race.   Windquest was 2nd and so finished a mere 1 point back.  Heartbreaker could only manage a 7th
and so took 3rd.

The 2nd annual 1D 35 Nationals were sailed in Holland MI and hometown boats took the 3 podium positions.  The top out of towner was Sled Shelhores's Avalanche.  This is the 2nd 4th place at Nationals for Avalanche.

J 35 Great Lakes Championships

Up the Lake Michigan coast in Muskegon this weekend saw the J 35 fleet's annual Great Lakes Championships.  9 J 35's sailed 7 races,
4 on Muskegon Lake and the final 3 on Lake Michigan.

Jim Maltman's Noble Buffalo was the story of the weekend, winning 6 of 7 races.  Noble's discard score was a 2nd!

2nd was Bozo's Circus which was consistently in the top 3 except for races 4 & 5.

3rd was Touch of Grey.  Sociable captured the won race that Noble Buffalo did not win.
