Verve Cup.....

Chicago was the site of the annual Verve Cup.
Sailed on 3 courses a variety of boats managed
2 days racing.  Saturday's races were cancelled
due to high wind and waves.

Several one design classes used the Verve Cup as
part of their national championship.

The One Design 35 fleet saw national leader Roxanne
come to Chicago and strengthen her lead by winning
the class in the Verve Cup.  The format of the 1D
35 national series is that boats keep the best 3 of
6 scores.  Roxanne now has wins at the Annapolis
Nood regatta, the Newport Gold regatta and the
Verve Cup.  The only other boat to have won a
counting event is War Bride.   War Bride must sweep
the two remaining events to tie Roxanne.

Other 1D 35's with national title hopes were Northern
Bear which was 3rd coming in and placed 7th and
Heartbreaker in 5th place.  Heartbreaker posted a
6th in the Verve Cup.  Finally in the 1D 35's Smiling
Bulldog was 2nd giving here a national series
line of 5,3,2.  With that improvement Smiling Bulldog
looks good the upcoming national championships
in Holland MI.

The Mumm 30 class at the Verve Cup was won by
USA 48.  This is also the boat that is leading the
Mumm 30 national points series.

Also to be  decided at the Verve Cup was the Farr 40
Great Lakes Championship.  Voodoo which led going
in finished strong winning the Verve Cup and taking
the Great Lakes season title with it.  The Verve Cup
racing did produce a change in 2nd and 3rd place.
Hot Lips hopped over Bandit to finish the season
series 2nd.  3rd was Bandit followed by Nitemare which
used the Verve Cup to overtake Program.  Final
points for the Top 5 Farr 40's were as follows:
Voodoo 37
Hot Lips 51
Bandit 54
Nitemare 55
Program 57

Last in this column but biggest in length overall
is new of the Great Lakes 70's.  Chicago based
Pied Piper took two titles over the weekend.  One
title was the Verve Cup win on the strength of 2 bullets
in 4 races and the other was the season title for the
Great Lakes 70's.  Pied Piper sailed to podium
positions in both Mac races and finished the series
strong around the buoys in Chicago.
