News from the race course


For the second straight  day there is a new team in the top 6.  After scoring 9 points in a race in which opponent Fast 2000 was dismasted Spain now holds 6th with 26 points.  This is 1 point ahead of Abracadabra and 2 points ahead of Young America.

Fast 2000's mast gave way as the twin keeled yacht sailed the third beat of the day.  Winds were 15-20 knots.  Eyewitness reports indicate that Fast 2000 was struck by a following wave and then the mast exploded.

Fast 2000 came to Auckland without a backup mast.  The Spanish challenge has offered to let Fast 2000 use one of its spare masts.  This means that Fast 2000 should be able to continue on.

Young America joined Fast 2000 and France in losing the first two races of round 3.  Young America was penalized twice.  The first penalty came on the first beat, the second when Young America attempted to score a penalty on Japan at the 2nd leeward mark.

If Fast 2000 can't race in flight 3, Young America will score a greatly needed 9 points just by completing the course.
