September Weather Report

For the second month in a row Muskegon had above normal temperatures. Temperatures peaked at 86 degrees on the 11th, and ended up +1.7° for the month. The monthly low was 38° on the 21st.

This is also the second year in a row September has been warmer than normal. In September 2002, temperatures were + 4.8 degrees.

Although there was no rain for the 1st 13 days, rainfall ended up near normal. 3.08 inches fell, just .44 inches below normal. The rainiest day was the 22nd when 1.22 inches fell.

Muskegon is an extremely cloudy place in the winter and September showed more clouds. The majority of days, 16, were still clear. However there were 8 partly cloudy and 6 cloudy days. Last month there were only 7 partly cloudy days and none that were officially cloudy. Going forward, October 2002 had 14 cloudy days.

Average winds for the month were 8.7 knots. This is + .6 knots from the norm. The windiest day was the 24th when winds averaged 14.8 knots. Least windy day was the 8th with only a 3.5 knot average. October could be windier yet as the average wind speed is 9.2 knots.

Year to date, despite only 2 months of above average normal temperatures, Muskegon is only .12 degrees below normal. However, 3 of the last 4 Octobers have been below normal in temperature.

September is the month the leaves begin to turn. Below see a picture of leaves on the same tree, in the same location, except one is from 9.29.02 and the other from 9.29.03.
