The Laser Great Lakes Championship 2002 at Sandusky Sailing Club drew 76
entries. Mostly were North America, coming as far as Nova Scotia, California,
Washington State, but the U.S. Virgin Islands and Cyprus were also
represented. The boats sailed on Sandusky Bay in light air Saturday and
moderate to light on Sunday.
"This is a great turnout, and apparently a growing event," said Regatta
Chairman Mike Zuilhof of Sandusky Sailing Club. "Last year in this event in
Rochester had about 50 boats. This weekend we had 76."
One of only seven sailboat types used for Olympic Yachting events, the
"Laser" is less than fourteen feet long and sailed by a single athlete. Also
sailed was the "Laser Radial" -- esentially the same hull with a slightly
smaller sail optimized for higher winds or athletes of lower body weight.
