1999 Key West Race Week Wednesday

Race 2 of Farr 40 Series is decided by 1 second

Day 3 of Race Week saw all divisions sail the full schedule of 2 races. The racing environment was: 8-13 knots of northeasterly breeze with flat seas.

Division 1 again had excellent and close offshore one design racing. At the end of the day's 2 races both the Farr 40 and One Design 35 classes had new boats in the lead.

The Farr 40 class was dominated by Hissar's 2 bullets.   However, this moved Hissar up to only 4th overall.  The new class leader is Persephene of Newport Beach California which posted finishes of 3rd and 2nd on Wednesday.

The One Design 35 class is now led by Pete Dupont's War Bride of Rockland Deleware. War Bride sailed to identical 2nd place finishes in Wednesday's racing.   Now 2nd overall is Windquest which scored a pair of 4th's in the days racing.   Windquest trails War Bride by only 2 points.  Former class leader Northern Bear is now 3rd after posting a 6th and a 10th.  Northern Bear is still only 3 points from1st.  Safe to say that any of these three plus several more One Design 35's could end up 1st.

The trend of ultra close racing in the One Design 35 class continued. In race 1 Joss beat Detente by 1 second for 13th place.  This is the 2nd day in a row Detente has lost a place by 1 tick of the clock !  Race 2's One Design 35 '1 second award' goes to Heartbreaker as they edged Fine Line by 1 second for 7th place.

As Torresen Marine is the Lake Michigan One Design 35 dealer, we'd like to recognize all the Great Lakes based One Design 35's racing:

Boat Home Port Race 1 Race 2 Race 3 Race 4 Race 5 Points Place
Northern Bear Milwaukee 2 2 5 6 10 25 3rd
Windquest Holland 3 4 9 4 4 24 2nd
Spot Holland 4 6 16 1 6 33 7th
Heartbreaker Holland 18 8 7 18 7 58 12th
Hippy Chick Muskegon 12 12 13 12 19 68 14th
Pronto Holland 15 9 15 11 5 55 16th
Detente Chicago 16 16 11 14 14 71 17th
White Knuckle St. Clair 19 20 19 8 15 81 20th

As you can see, the 20 boat fleet is ultra competitive.  Doing consistently well, is difficult due to the close competition which is produced by the identical performance level of the One Design 35's.

In PHRF 3 Muskegon's Lunatic Fringe a pair of 4's keeping her among the class leaders.

In Division 1 Class A the race winners were: Virago and Highland Fling while Class B had Brava and Hawk as Wednesday race winners.

Division 2 Class A is led by the Mount Gay 30 Surprise which has 6 1st places in 6 races.

Class B which is composed of Viper 830's and is led by Guy de Boer sailing RE.  RE leads by only 1 point even though Wednesday saw RE post a 1st and a 2nd.

Division 3 is composed of 3 one design fleets- Henderson 30,   Mumm 30 and Melges 24.

The Henderson 30's are paced by Speedracer with 1sts in all 6 races sailed.

In the Mumm 30's Sector leads by 9 points after winning both Wednesday races.

The Melges 24's are led by White Loaf with 18 points, and finishes of 2 & 1 on Wednesday.  2nd is Full Throttle 3 points back.  Former class leader Planet Loaf fell to 6th after sailing to finishes of 16th and 25th.  lead is held by Planet Loaf, with 3 points after day 1.
