Officially designated by Michigan's Governor and Legislature, the 12th Annual "Governor's Cup" Regatta will take place on August 30 and 31, 1997.

A long-standing Labor Day weekend tradition, the Governor's Cup is Muskegon's last major Regatta of the year and attracts the largest number of divisions of the sailing season. In addition to many local participants, sailors from all over Lake Michigan will be visiting to compete for Lake Michigan Area IV Championship points and the S2 9.1 Meter Great Lakes One Design Championship. Other one design classes like the J24 and J35 have also been encouraged to race one design.

Hopefully, you participated in the outstanding success of last year's Governor's Cup. If not, you probably heard about it from others. Cruisers or racers who have yet to experience this regatta should make plans now to attend this exciting event!

As always, the Regatta's activities are based out of the Muskegon Yacht Club. Located on Muskegon Lake, MYC features a pool, club house and lounge, lawn, patio and spacious docks. As many of you know, parking at or near the Club is plentiful, but can still be scarce at the events of this size. Participants are reminded that the Club's "members only" parking policy will again be enforced and that extra parking is available just down the road at Torresen Marine, Inc., 3126 Lakeshore Drive.

Last year's race operations were clearly among the best on Lake Michigan. Given that success, we are very pleased to report that this year's race will again be conducted under the nationally reknowned leadership of Mr. Vlad Kobal, US Sailing Certified Principal Race Officer from the Chicago Yacht Club.

Also back by popular demand will be races held on TWO separate race courses on Lake Michigan. A bouy race course for all Spinnaker divisions, and an extended, port to port style bouy course for the jib-and-main divisions. Races will take place Saturday and Sunday only, leaving the Monday holiday for family time or boat deliveries. There will be two races on Saturday for the spinnaker division and one for the jib-and-main divisions. There will be one race on Sunday for all divisions.

In addition to the usual heap of prizes, give-aways and daily flags through four places, overall flags and trophies will be presented in each division. The perpetual "Governor's Cup" will be awarded to the overall winner in the spinnaker divisions, and the "Lieutenant Governor's Cup" will be given to the overall winner in the jib-and-main divisions.

As always, the emphasis is on fun, with as many parties as races. The traditional kick-off party will take place at Muskegon Yacht Club on Friday, August 29. Available dockage is free for regatta participants. Be sure to check in on Friday for your entry kit, class flag and the weekend program. You, your crews and families are also urged to join in the 1997 Muskegon "Shoreline Spectacular". The Muskegon trolley service will be available to take you to and from the beach and other spots in town from MYC.

Make plans now to attend one of Lake Michigan's most enjoyable sailing events! Simply take a moment to complete and sign an entry form and mail it with your check and PHRF certification to the address on the form.

Entry forms can be picked up at Torresen Marine, Inc., 3126 Lakeshore Drive, Muskegon, Michigan 49441 or you may call Torresen Marine, Inc. at 231-759-8596.

The entire Governor's Cup Committee looks forward to joining you and your friends for a great Labor Day weekend at the 1997 Governor's Cup Regatta!
