Event News: Louis Vuitton Cup Continues
Available on line at:
http://www.torresen.com/news/atwos/2002/oc/1016/ms.htm
The scheduled time for Round 1 of the Louis Vuitton
Challenger Trials has ended. However, Round 1 of racing is
not officially complete. There is still a single match
between Prada and Mascalzone Latino which will be sailed
October 22nd with Round 2 beginning the next day.
Between rounds teams can modify boats, test and develop and
even take some time off. For instance Alinghi has already
had a day off and will sail every day with their two boats.
Prada is performing modifications to both boats and will not
spend as much time sailing.
Round 1 was won by One World, which posted the only
undefeated record. This came with youngster James Spithill
at the wheel rather than veteran Peter Gilmour.
Alinghi was second with only a loss to One World. According
to Russell Coutts, "We haven't necessarily put our top 16
people together on the boat together yet."
Oracle was third with 5 winds. Their round started better
than it finished.
Team Dennis Conner is listed 4th with 4 points. This by
virtue of their opening race win over Great Britain.
The inexperienced Great Britain squad closed with a winning
streak. Of note during the round was a switch in starting
helm from Andy Green to Andy Beadsworth.
The comes Prada, the newsmaker of the 1st round. They sailed
below expectations, fired their designer and started
modifications on their 2nd boat.
First time competitor Victory Challenge started off well,
but ended with 3 points and no wins over the teams ahead of
them.
Mascalzone Latino won only 1 race. The team they beat was
the French Le Defi group. Their round concluded with a
broken forestay. Repairs will take away necessary on water
improvement time.

What Kind of Oil Goes in My Engine?
A common question from diesel engine owners is: "Should I
use a diesel grade engine oil and what specification/grade
to use."
We can start by eliminating the oil you might use in your
auto engine if it's a gas engine. There are separate lube
oils for gas and diesel engines.
So, yes, you should use a diesel grade oil. How to determine
this?
Take a look at the label on the oil container. You should
see something like this: "API Service CH-4,CG-4,CF-4,CF/SJ"
The C tells that it is a diesel oil. The designations are
more specific. For instance CF-2 a current diesel lube oil
category is for "severe duty, two-stroke engines." If the oil
has all the designations listed above it can be used in a
variety of diesel engines.
The specific categories are determined by the American
Petroleum Institute. They have been classifying oils for
years.
Some engine manuals, such as a Universal Service Manual list
grades such as CD. This is an obsolete classification
having been initiated in 1955. All of the current grades
listed above can be used in place of CD oils. The listing
of obsolete grades in manuals can cause problems as engine
owners are looking for a grade that isn't used anymore.
To sum up the answer: yes use a diesel specific oil, use the
grades listed on the API Oil chart.
Also when changing you oil make sure to dispose properly of
used engine oil, i.e. not at your marina or boatyard dumpster.
You can find a location to recycle your used oil at

Event News: Around Alone Leg 2 Starts
Available on line at:
http://www.torresen.com/news/atwos/2002/oc/1016/ms.htm
The 6880 mile 2nd leg of Around Alone started Monday.
Delayed a day due to heavy conditions, this leg is similar to
that of Leg 1 of the Volvo Ocean race and takes the lone
sailors to Cape Town, South Africa which has been a port of
call for all Around Alone Races.
After the delay start conditions were mild. Winds were
light from the north, pretty much the definition of an ideal
sailing day.
Despite short turn around times for some late finishers all
were on time except for the Class I entry Ocean Planet. The
American Open 60 was able to start that same afternoon.
Once all were racing conditions nastied right up. Winds
were 20 knots and up and the Bay of Biscay lived up to it's
tough reputation. From Everest Horizontal Tim Kent wrote,
"All along, I have said that I did not want to sail across
the Bay of Biscay in a storm. Now that I am doing it, I
still don't like it." Last report had Everest Horizontal
5th in Class II, 46 miles back.
The conditions soon copped class I entry Tiscali a blow.
Simone Bianchetti had to sail his Open 60 to Brest France
due to auto pilot problems. Upon arrival he also had
several broken battens and a busted stanchion, courtesy of
Biscay. His shore team is with him and he hope to be racing
again soon.
The respective class leaders are the same boats that
finished 1st on Leg 1. Bernard Stamm has Bobst Group 36
miles ahead in Class I and also shows the best speed.
American Brad Van Liew has Tommy Hilfiger Freedom America up
by 25 miles over the first Open 40 Spirit of Canada.
Ahead is big storm covering half the North Atlantic. Brad
Van Liew writes of this upcoming challenge, " I guess if it
were easy everyone would do it."
