Short Tack: Olympic Qualification

Qualification for the sailing events in the Olympics begins
long before the Olympic trials. With the exception of the
host nation (Greece) each country must qualify in each of
the 11 classes. Typically qualification is via finishes at
class world championships. A given class might have 5
berths. The 5 slots go to the top 5 countries. Sweeping
the 1st, 2nd and 3rd position nets only one berth.

To date all classes except for Mistral windsurfers have
begun qualification. Spain has qualified for the most events
with 6 including both 470 men's and women's and 49er skiffs.
2 countries have made it in 5 classes including Australia
with Europe and Laser berths. The USA has qualified for 3
events: Star, Yngling and 470 Men. The first round of
qualifications will be completed after the Mistral World
Championships which begin in late November.
