Short Tack: Regatta Rubicon
Available on line at:

This two stage race for Open 60 mono hulls has begun leg 2
heading for Gibraltar and the Mediterranean Sea. The first
leg, ending in the Canary Islands, was won by Sill followed by
Kingfisher and Bobst Group Armor Lux.

For Leg 2 Ellen Macarthur has stepped off Kingfisher for a
trimaran event with Jules Verne record holder Nick Moloney
assuming the position of skipper. Herve Jan who was also
onboard Orange joins Kingfisher, too. Their former mate on
Orange, Jean-Baptiste Epron, has joined Sill.

The start of the race has seen the 60's beating into a stiff
wind, with reefs and small headsails. The top 4 boats are
within 3 miles of each other. According to Nick Moloney:
"Crashing away upwind...We're on Solent and 2 reefs - nearly
time to go 1 reef."

With the race being scored on points the close racing should
continue the entire leg.

Short Tack: Safe Boating Week
Available on line at:
http://www.torresen.com/news/atwos/2002/my/0522/st.htm

Beginning Saturday and ending Friday is 2002 National Safe
Boating Week. With Memorial Day serving as the unofficial
Green Light for Michigan boating here's some safety
reminders. Also see the first Boat Smart Column of the year
for more safety pointers.

In the space of 4 days, 11 sailors were rescued off the east
coast. Two of the boats had been dismasted. Two of the sailors
were from Illinois. Two of the rescues were EPIRB assisted.

Off New Zealand sailor Chris Sayer was rescued from a life
raft by a Taiwanese fishing boat. His 6.5M yacht struck
an object, lost her keel and capsized. An EPIRB played a
role in this rescue.

Closer to home keep these facts in mind. Last year Coast
Guard Units in West Michigan responded to 1143 incidents.
Breaking this down along the lines of the traditional
Memorial Day/ Labor Day season that's 12 per day! Amongst
those incidents 70 were of people in the water with 8 deaths
occurring.

With water levels again uncertain this will mean that once
again boaters will have to be aware or there will be more
than the 125 groundings reported last year. You should carry
an appropriate chart, update it through the notice to
mariners and observe red right returning to stay afloat.
