Iker Martinez and Xabi Fernandez of Spain are the new 49er world champions. They won by 8 points over Chris Draper and Simon Hiscocks from Great Britain. 3rd was another British team Paul Brotherton and Mark Asquith.
Morgan Larson and Ed Smyth were the top USA team finishing 10th. These results mean Spain, Great Britain, Ukraine, Italy, Denmark and Netherlands have qualified for the 2004 Olympics in this class with the USA one position short of clinching a spot.

Short Tack: Blake Killers Sentenced

A Brazilian court found six men accused of killing accomplished yachtsman and New Zealand National Hero Sir Peter Blake guilty. They received prison sentences from 27 to 37 years.
The maximum prison sentence in Brazil is 30 years, so the penalty were severe.. Ricardo Colares Tavares who shot the gun that killed Blake received a longer sentence of 36 years 9 months.
