Short Tack: Bermuda Race
Available on line at:

182 boats began the bi-annual Newport to Bermuda race. The
Atlantic provided a strong South Westerly which made for a
fast and tough race.

The fast part is shown by Pyewacket setting a new race
record. The West Coast boats time 53h:39m:22s, which broke
the record set in 1996. Owner Roy Disney said despite the
fast sail, ""You would Not have wanted to be on the boat."

There are several examples of the toughness of the race.
Trader an Andrew 70 retired when their mast broke in 3
different places. Additionally three boats, Morning Glory,
Boomerang, and Bright Star has man over board incidents. Two
took place during sail changes. In at least one case the
person overboard wore a PFD. In all cases successful
recoveries were made.

Two Great Lakes based boats competed. Denali a Nelson Marek
68 finished the course in 3 days 6 hours, finishing 5th in
class. Natalie J a 46 footer sailed to Bermuda in 3 days 21
hours, finishing 7th.
