Short Tack: Coutts over Barker # 2
Available on line at:
http://www.torresen.com/news/atwos/2002/jl/0710/st.htm
It's rare when sailing sees something like a rivalry in
sports. Depending on future circumstances Dean Barker
(current Team New Zealand helm) v. Russell Coutts (won
America's Cup twice with Team NZL) could be historic. In
fact in the last race of the previous cup series Coutts
prophetically turned over the wheel to Barker.
Currently it's Barker who is leading Coutts. For the second
straight time Barker beat Coutts in a match race final. The
final went Barker 3 Coutts 0 as Barker won the Swedish Match
cup finishing with a 16-4 record. Barker beat Coutts at the
Omega Seamaster Cup last month. Perhaps, according to
Barker, the rivalry is not existent yet: "There's no
friction between our crews. We had a few drinks with his
guys the night before the final. It's all in good spirits.
We just like racing."
