Over the weekend in Auckland there was a unique gathering of
sailors who once sailed Finns and returned to the water to
do so again. 14 world class sailors sailed 4 races.
For some like Russell Coutts it had been awhile since the
physicalness of Finn sailing. In his case it was since his
Olympic Gold in 1984. For others such as current class
champion Sebastian Godefroit it was another day at the
watery office.
Godefroit did end up in 1st with 3 top 3 finishes in the 4
races. He was followed by American and past Olympic
medallist Brian Ledbetter now with the One World America's
Cup Challenge. 3rd was Stuart Bannatyne currently a watch
captain with illbruck challenge. Race winners were Craig
Monk of One World Challenge, and Glenn Bourke and
Bannantyne of illbrick.
Showing his decades long layoff and the stiff competition
Russell Coutts finished 13th out of 14.

A year ago Club Med led The Race by 778 miles over
Innovation Explorer. The third maxi cat Team Adventure was in
Cape Town being repaired.
Soon we will see another event like this race. Within the
next month Bruno Peyron's Ornage (ex Innovation Explorer)
and Olivier De Kersauson's trimaran Geronimo will make
attempts on the Jules Verne Trophy.
The Jules Verne Trophy goes to the fastest circumnavigation
with no rules on the type of boat. De Kersauson set the
current record of 71 days in 1997. Peyron skippered the
initial under 80-day trip in 1993-94.
Unlike the crews of The Race these two projects are almost
strictly French crewed. Peyron's group includes Frenchman
Heve Jan and Australian Nick Maloney as watch captains.
Geronimo's personnel will include veterans Yves Pouillaude
and Didier Ragot.
