Available on line at:

Two days of racing have been completed off Key West Florida.
Day 1 was not the best as only 2 of 4 divisions completed a
race. Day 2 was much better with a full calendar of races
sailed.
Nerone, a Farr 40 hailing from Italy, was boat of the day on
Monday. Nerone led Chicago based Virago home in the days
only race.
In Division 1 Dame Blanch, a Beneteau 40.7 sailing in PHRF 5,
scored the biggest corrected time margin of 4:04. Other
winners in the days only race included: Decision in PHRF 1,
Strabo in PHRF 2 and Wairere in PHRF 3.
Day 2 saw all classes racing. The largest fleet is the
Melges 24 which are contesting their World Championships.
Befitting a class holding it's world championship the three
race winners in the Melges 24 fleet were from: France,
America and Switzerland. Yet another country is represented
as Great Britain's Black Seal leads with 8 points after 3
races.
Boat of the day on Tuesday was the Mumm 30 Foreign Affair
which posted a 2nd and a 1st to win the award. The top 5
in this class are from 5 different countries with Dan Cheresh's
Bug Juice the top American boat in 5th.

Theme: Roller Furling Part III
Available on line at:
http://www.torresen.com/news/atwos/2002/ja/0123/ms.htm
In the final three installments of our theme series on
roller furlers we will look at products produced by specific
companies. These are not the only options available just
some that are familiar and known to ATWOS.
This week we continue our look at different companies
headsail roller furling options. Hood Yacht Systems offers
3 options.
The Seafurl 5 features a removable drum for easy conversion
and an airfoil extrusion.
The Seafurl SL has a non-removable drum with a dual groove
extrusion making inline sail changes possible.
The Seafurl LD has a one-piece continuous furling line.
This means the furler can have a lower profile drive unit as
there is no need to have multiple wraps of furling line
on the drum.
For those who already own a Hood furling unit Torresen
Marine stocks parts for Hood Furlers. In stock parts
include: bearing assemblies, feeders, splice pieces and
rope strippers. Contact our Ships Store for more
information.

Event News: Rolex Awards
Available on line at:
http://www.torresen.com/news/atwos/2002/ja/0123/ms.htm
US Sailing in conjunction with long time sponsor Rolex has
named it's Yachtsman and Yachtswoman of the Year.
Winner of the Yachtsman of the Year was Steve Fossett who
skippered the maxi cat Playstation to 5 records including
the Transatlantic and the 24 hours record. Of these
achievements Fossett said: "The TransAtlantic record is far
and away the most important to me. There have been 24
attempts in 11 years to break it, and three of those were
made by me. The second is the 24-hour record, since it
defines who has sailed the fastest in an ocean, anywhere in
the world, any time."
Cory Sertl who first won the Yachtwoman of the Year award in
1995 had a year topped by winning the Rolex International
Women's Keelboat Championship held in September. Sertl also
won the Santa Maria Cup match racing event. In addition
Sertl is serving as part of Jody Swanson's team that will
compete for a 2004 Olympic berth in the Yngling class.

Event News: Volvo Ocean Race Leg 4
Available on line at:
http://www.torresen.com/news/atwos/2002/ja/0123/ms.htm

New Djuice crew Grant Wharington
This weekend the 8 Volvo 60's will once again take on the
Southern Ocean. This leg the teams take on what Paul Cayard
call the best part of the Volvo Ocean Race. He describes
the leg this way: "but it is still exhilarating and it will
be fun to see a lot of things, the nature, the sea life,
Cape Horn."
As Leg 4 begins it looks like 4 boats still retain a chance
of winning the race title via a points system. All have
shown some consistency with illbruck winning 2 of 3 legs.
Amer Sports I has been 2nd twice and for this leg they will
have Paul Cayard onboard who was the winning skipper last
time.

News Corp. sits third with a pair of 3rds. They may
not have navigator Ross Field for this leg, he's doubtful
with rib injuries. Southern Ocean specialist Gordon Maguire
returns. Assa Abloy finally broke through on Leg 3. They'll
lose Chris Larson and pick up Roberto ´Chuny´ Bermudez de
Castro.

The other 4 boats see their chances of winning slipping and
not surprisingly some more crew changes are seen. 5th place
Tyco still is working to overcome not finishing the last
Southern Ocean leg. 6th place SEB has 3 new crew from 3
different countries the most of any team. 7th place Djuice
has retrenched and taken on French ocean ace Thomas Coville
and Aussie Grant Warthington. Amer Sports II has added
experience with British sailors Miranda Merron coming on as
navigator along with Emma Richards.
Leg 4 will be played out between the top 4 with their
consistent results and coherent teams against the less
successful and therefore more morphing crews.
