Mark Soverel yacht designer, sailor, boat builder, fisherman, surfer, diver, powerboat designer, and cruiser died at age 52 in Palm City Florida on 3 January. Soverel was a true all arounder designing the Soverel 33 still a strong class and the Soverel 39. Other successful racing boats he was associated with include: Moody Blue, Locura, Volition and Blue Angel.
Soverel was a person who accomplished much just by a superior feel and desire. In Scuttlebutt, Tom Lihan wrote about the Soverel 33, "When the Soverel 33 was conceived, the design consisted of notepad sketches, a few beers, and a bunch of guys sawing up the Soverel 30 plug laying behind the shop. A hole was dug in the ground outside and keels were poured. Some fairing, a mast tube from Kenyon and a bit more beer resulted in the first boat."
For those familiar with Soverel and wishing to honor him donations can be sent to DEP Save Our Everglades Trust Fund, P.O. Box 3070, Tallahassee FL, 32315.
