Available on line at:
http://www.torresen.com/news/atwos/2002/fe/0227/ms.htm
Michigan sailor Ron Sherry recently won the DN class iceboat
world championship. He had 15 points to 18 for Karol
Jabonski. The regatta was sailed in Estonia, which is
located across the water and south of Finland.
Six races were sailed with Sherry in the top 3 in 4 of them.
He won races 2 and 5. Going into the final 2 races Sherry
trailed by a single point.
In the final two races he posted a 1st and 3rd while
Jabolonski could only sail to 4th in these races. Due to
this Sherry won the ultimate road game regatta.
Sherry is also a successful soft water sailor having been
nominated for the Rolex Yachtsman of the Year. Jabolonski is
also an all around sailor. He is currently the 14th ranked
match racer by the ISAF.
Closer to home Matt Struble won the DN Central Region
championship. He won 3 of the 7 races sailed edging Greg
Smith by 5 points.

Theme: Radar Part IV
Available on line at:
http://www.torresen.com/news/atwos/2002/fe/0227/ms.htm
The past 3 articles have discussed the main components of a
radar system: antenna, mount and display. This week we'll
look at a safety related radar item and some radar links.
Radar Reflectors: Radar is all about electronically seeing
the sea environment around you. Radar reflectors are all
about being seen especially in the case of a big ship
little sailboat situation.
One type of reflector is the Mobri Cylindrical reflector.
This tube can be hoisted on the mast or clamped to a
shroud.
Another type is made of aluminum or plastic with
perpendicular panels that forms a circular shape. These are
typically less expensive than the Mobri type.
A third type is the Firdell Blipper, which has the appearance
of a fender. This reflector also can be hoisted aloft.
Whichever type you decide upon one should be part of your
boats standard kit. The Torresen Marine ship's store can
assist you in finding the appropriate radar reflector.

Event News: Jules Verne Trophy
Available on line at:
http://www.torresen.com/news/atwos/2002/fe/0227/ms.htm
The 110 foot French crewed trimaran Geronimo has crossed the
first major marker on her around the world voyage. Geronimo
has crossed the equator in 9 days and 7 hours. Sailing from
a different location the lead boats in The Race took 10
days, while ENZA made it in 7 days in 1993-94 when the set
the Jules Verne mark.
Up until the 20° north mark Geronimo was making tracks in
true very large multi hull fashion. Last Thursday she had
done 493 miles. Then came the Doldrums. Mileage descended
from 317 to 166 to just 79 miles. Skipper Olivier de
Kersauson is calm despite this saying "What has happened is
part of the sport. Crossing deserts devoid of wind is part
of what we do"
The Doldrums or Pot au Noir slowed Geronimo's tremendous
pace. Still they have a 427-mile advantage on the record.
Current record holder Sport Elec took 11 days to reach the
equator. All in all a solid if not spectacular performance
in the 1st half of the Atlantic.
Back in France repairs continue to the catamaran Orange's
mast. Today Bruno Peyron announced that they would once
again be on the water beginning this Saturday.

News: Leg 4 finish
Available on line at:
http://www.torresen.com/news/atwos/2002/fe/0227/ms.htm

SEB arrived in the Chillian port of Punta Arenas Feb15 after losing her mast in the Southern Ocean during the Volvo Ocean Race.

Last Thursday the jury ruddered News Corp and then
Amer Sports Too made landfall and finished. This drew Leg 4
to a close.
After Leg 4 the standings show illbruck with a large 7 point
lead over Amer Sports One. This lead is big enough to
survive the following. Say that illbruck dismasts during the
next leg. They take 8th and get only 1 point. Amer Sports
wins. This would bring Amer Sports only into a tie with
illbruck.
Is a drastic leveler likely to happen? Well such a
scenario occurred in 1993-94 to Tokio. illbruck has been so
steady that it's unlikely but still within the realm.

Too skipper Lisa McDonald)

If Amer Sports doesn't get a drastic break then they have 5
legs to overcome the current 7 point deficit. Just beating
illbruck for 5 legs would not make them a winner. They
would need boats in between.

Where News Corps' rudder should be

To date illbruck has 3 podium finishes (all 1sts). Amer
Sports (2 2nd's), News Corp (2 3rd's) and Tyco (2 3rd's)
also have multiple top 3's. Assa Abloy (a 1st) and SEB and
Djuice (1 2nd apiece) also have been near the top.
For Amer Sports One to win they would need to win a many
thousand mile match race with illbruck multiple times. Even
if they do this they'll need other boats to also raise their
level above that of illbruck's.
If it was just a matter of one on one victory Amer Sports
would stand a good chance. Needing to go beyond this simple
form of result it is illbruck that looks real fine for an
overall win.

Team SEB re launched from BBC Anglia in Rio de Janeiro
after transport from Punta Arenas.
