Short Tack: Around Alone heads to NY

Around Alone 2002 will start a day after the 14 September
Sail for America event, which will fill New York Harbor with
sails as a symbolic rebirth event.

On the 12th of September the fleet will sail a crewed
prologue race from Newport to New York. In New York the
fleet will be berthed at the Intrepid Museum home to a WW II
aircraft carrier.

French entrant Marc Thiercelin said of the plan: "This will
be a very poignant homage to the innocent."

Short Tack: Antarctica Cup

A significant new offshore race has been initiated by the
Royal Perth Yacht Club of Fremantle, Australia. Called the
Antarctica Cup the race an 11-leg, non-stop race from
Fremantle to Fremantle (eastbound) taking in three of the
world's great Capes - Cape Horn, Cape Leeuwin and the Cape
of Good Hope.

Boats will be one design in nature 25M/82 FT designed by Ron
Holland. This race will be open to yacht clubs around the
world, which will represent their countries, boats will have
to be skippered and crewed by nationals of the country they
represent,

There will be prize money of $ 100,000 for each leg and a
total possible of $ 4.65 million. A leg need not be the
overall leader to win leg prize money. Each leg of the race
is named after a noted historic ship such as Endeavour,
Spary and Fram.
