Tauranga, New Zealand has been chosen as the finishing point
for the 1st Around Alone Southern Ocean leg which starts in
Cape Town.

Tauranga is located in the Bay of Plenty region on New
Zealand's East coast, some 250km south of Auckland.

In Maori Tauranga means 'Safe Anchorage'. This will be the
first time Around Alone has visited Tauranga. Previously
the lone sailors had stopped in Sydney and Auckland.
Arrival is estimated on 28 December of this year, with the
restart on 26 January 2003

Short Tack: Flashback 1998 Whitbread
Available on line at:
http://www.torresen.com/news/atwos/2002/ap/0403/st.htm

Currently the Whitbread fleet is pounding
up the Atlantic Coast into the Chesapeake. With
the wind on the nose in the 20 knot range, and the
Gulf Stream current pushing 3-4 knots north the
seas are steep and nasty...

The unexpected leader is Brunel Synergy.
They gained this lead by making an improbable yet
successful move to the east. The pre race
conventional wisdom said stay in the Gulf Stream,
don't go east and out of the current....

Brunel Synergy maintained her lead to the finish and
took her first leg win. Swedish Match narrowly
edged overall race leader EF Language for 2nd.
Match's margin was a scant 30 seconds.
