Event News: Congressional Cup Day 1

Despite any off the water personal/political troubles that
Oracle Racing may have suffered when it comes to boat to
boat match racing Peter Holmberg is currently THE MAN full
stop. Cutler and his 5 man crew with John Cutler on tactics
went 5-0 on day 1 of the Swedish Match Tour's Congressional
Cup.

In order Holmberg's team beat Andy Green of Great Britain
Challenge by 47 seconds, Ken Read of Stars and Stripes by 23
seconds, local Scott Dickson by 26 seconds, Rod Davis of
Prada by 7 seconds and Ed Baird by 18 seconds.

Another hot skipper is Dane Jes Gram Hansen. He finished 4-1
losing to Prada's Gavin Brady while beating Rod Davis, Ed
Baird, Andy Green and Luc Pillot of Le Defí Areva. The last
two wins came by 2 and 6 seconds respectively.

Read, Dickson and Brady were next at 3-2. Green and Pillot
representing European Cup teams were at the bottom at 1-4.
Pillot's win came over Davis, while Green's sole victory was
over Ken Read.

Racing in a double round robin format continues until
Saturday's semi finals and finals.

This is the 2nd article in our series on docking which
covers fenders. Thanks to all who attended this past
Sunday's Docking and Docklines seminar. I am working on
providing full answers on several subjects such as docking
bridles. They will appear in ATWOS soon.

Proper Inflation Fenders can be re inflated with a bicycle
type air pump. If no air gauge aim for a moderately firm
fender with some give to it.

Extras when cruising It's a always a good idea to allocate
storage space for fenders when taking a cruise. You can't
predict your docking configuration and plenty of fenders and
a fender board will allow proper docking.

Types

A. Round Made of PVC. Generally have 2 eyes so fenders
can be hung horizontally or vertically.
B. Flat - Puncture proof less likely to roll out of place.
Other uses such as cushions, knee pads when working etc.

Fender Size Guide

Round Buoys
to 25 feet 9" diameter
20-35 11.5"
30-45 15.5"
40-55 18.5"

Hole Through the Middle Fenders
20-30 Feet HTM 1 or 6" diameter
25-40 Feet HTM 2 or 8" diameter
30-45 Feet HTM 2 or 8" diameter
40-60 Feet HTM 3 or 10" Diameter

Securing Fenders: Use stanchion base, deck cleat or toe
rail. Don't use lifelines as this will break lifelines.

# of Fenders: Minimum of 3. 1 at the point of maximum beam,
1 fore and 1 aft.

Rafting- Place your fenders at point of greatest contact
which is generally the point of max beam. Bunch 3 fenders
at maximum beam, the 1 fore and 1 aft for further
protection.

Fender boards are of particular use when you are tying up
to pilings. A horizontal or vertical tie may not work. A
fender board bridges the gap and keeps the fenders in place.

The Indian Ocean may not have been fully to the liking of
the Race Class Cat Orange and her 13 man crew. The Pacific
Ocean is proving a faster racetrack.

Sailing deep in the wastelands of the Southern Pacific
Orange will round Cape Horn within a week. The last 3 days
have seen the majority French crew poke Orange up into true
maxi cat pace. 24 hour mileage during that period: 588, 610
and 603! Bruno Peyron gives this impression: "Pure Speed!
We are on the front of a system and moving virtually at the
same speed as the low."

It's been 40 days at sea for Nick Moloney the only non
French crew. How does 40 days on the water alter
perspective? Nick describes: "...I was moving a vest that I
was wearing the day we left terra firma... many days ago and
I heard this strange sound. It was coins rattling in my
pocket. Its a sound that most of us here several times a day
but never notice...out here it was a strange sound...hadnt
seen money for over a month....what a simple and pure
existence we have at sea."

Record holder Sport Elec passed Cape Horn on Day 47.
Orange's rounding will give a clear picture of what their
true pace has been.

News: Volvo Ocean Race Leg 6

The upcoming Leg 6 will be the shortest leg yet for the 8
boat fleet. It will not be the shortest of the race
however. To see the unique distinction this leg holds see
Finish Line below.

Leg 6 will begin a phase that features short legs, the
longest being leg 7 at 3400 the shortest the final leg at
250 miles. The relative shortness of this phase of the legs
will up the level of intensity in an already frantic race.

As seen from the flashback report above, a key issue in this
leg is the Gulf Stream current. Last time it was thought
that staying in the current was best, but the leg winner
tacked outside of it.

There will be crew changes and reconfigurations for this
leg. Team SEB has added Star Gold Medallist Mark Reynolds to
help with helming and tactics. Fellow San Diegan Peter Isler
will join News Corp. Ross Filed will not be onboard due to a
rib injury, with meteorologist Nick White taking his place.
illbruck with return to carrying 2 navigators as they did on
leg 1. Co-navigator Juan Vila explains, "This means we will
have no down time with a navigator asleep. This is because
an important decision may come up at any time during the
leg." Sailing along the American coast crews will have
reams of real time data to analyze and factor into
decisions.


Suunto Adventure Race
Nautor Team 1's Emma Westmacott, Grant Dalton and Jeff Brock 
ask for directions to the rounding mark on the swim course.

Leg 6 begins Sunday off Miami with an ETA for Baltimore of
Wednesday. Early weather outlook indicates E 10-15 for the
start with the wind switching to the NE and building as they
fleet nears Cape Hatteras and then staying under 20 as they
approach Baltimore.
