Racing News: Swedish Match Tour Event 2
Available on line at:
http://www.torresen.com/sd/0328_ms.htm
The story of this event was Peter Gilmour and his team record of 25-1.
Gilmour was the defending champion of the Sun Microsystems Australia
Cup and his near perfect performance left little doubt was who was the
best team.
Gilmour sailed with a crew from his One World America's Cup challenge.
According to Gilmour, British Laser Gold Medallist Ben Ainslie was a
most important team member, "I simply put it down to Ben Ainslie."
The only team to beat Gilmour's was skippered by Ken Read. However,
Read lost 2-0 in the semi finals to Gilmour. Gilmour finished off the
Prada team skippered by Brady 2-0, Read topped Tour points leader
Holmberg for 3rd.
The next tour event is 24-30 May, the ACI Cup of Croatia in Split,
Croatia. Before that is the Congressional Cup a Grade 1 event 24-29
April sailed off Long Beach California.

Spring Commissioning: Spring Systems Check
Available on line at:
http://www.torresen.com/sd/0328_ms.htm
This month's theme series topic is commissioning. This week's
article is on system checks. There are a number of items that should be
checked during the launch of your boat.
As the boat hits the water you should check your through hulls.
These are items such as instrument and depth sounder transducers. If
there is water seeping or leaking around them, get the boat out of the
water and the leaks fixed.
Hopefully the boat is not leaking. Eventually you will have
some water on board and will need your bilge pump. Flip the switch, or
give the handle a few strokes and see if it pumps. If not, check the
pumps wiring and to see if the intake is clogged.
Your boat's head may also have been winterized. Cycle the
system to get the anti freeze out and check the valves, seals etc.
The procedure is the same for water systems. Start the pump
to remove anti freeze. Add some water to the system and then check
for proper operation. This is also a good way to rinse the tanks
before a summer's use.
Another area that is always important is the engine. If the
engine has been properly winterized this is typically not much of a
concern. Once you start the engine, check immediately to see if the
engine is cooling properly. Usually a glance at the exhaust to see if
the engine is spitting out anti freeze, and then water will let you
know. If it isn't, begin trouble shooting. A common problem is a
through hull that has not been opened.
You can probably see a theme developing. As soon as practical
put your boats systems into motion. If they have been properly put to
bed re-starting should not be a problem. However, if problems develop
the sooner you know the sooner they can be fixed. It's always better
to try to fix items such as a bilge pump in harbor rather than on water.
The Race: Team Adventure Finishes
Available on line at:
http://www.torresen.com/sd/0328_ms.htm
Team Adventure became the third race class catamaran to finish its
initial circumnavigation. Cam Lewis and his mostly French crew
finished Saturday morning in Marseilles France. With stops in Cape
Town, South Africa and Wellington, New Zealand Team Adventure completed
the course in 82 days 20 hours 21 minutes and 2 seconds. This averaged
14.97 knots. The repair stops pushed their miles sailed up to 29,773.
Next for Team Adventure is the Discovery Route from Cadiz Spain to the
Bahamas. Then from New York to England while taking a shot at the
west to east Trans Atlantic record. Team Adventure should be back at
sea in 2 weeks.
Remaining on the course are Team Legato and the repaired Warta
Polpharma. They will miss the April 2 deadline for finishing. They
expect to arrive approximately April 8th and will be classified as the
4th and 5th place cats.

Racing News: Times Clipper
Available on line at:
http://www.torresen.com/sd/0328_ms.htm
The Times Clipper 2000-2001 is similar to the BT Challenge in that
amateur sailors pay to sail around the world. However, this race
sails a unique route that spends considerable miles in the trade wind
belts.
Currently, they have just completed sailing an 850-mile leg from
Okinawa to Hong Kong. This is in the China Sea, an area other round
the world races do not sail.
The top 3 'Clippers' on this leg were: Jersey, Bristol, and Liverpool.
Overall leaders after 7 legs are; Bristol, Plymouth and London.
Next it's onto San Fernando and then Singapore.
