The first event on the calendar for the world class sailors of the
Swedish Match Tour concluded this weekend in Auckland New Zealand.

For the second consecutive year Bertrand Pace was the winner.
Although a French native he now sails for Team New Zealand. His crew
consisted of Team New Zealand members Peter Evans, Jarrod Henderson,
Grant Loretz and Chris Salthouse.

The final came down to Pace and Team New Zealand vs. Gavin Brady and
his crew from the Prada challenge. Pace won the regatta by less than
a boat length defeating Brady 3-2, after being down 2 races to 1. Pace
won $ 26,000 for this victory.

The tour quickly moved onto the Sun Microsystems Cup in Fremantel
Australia. After one day of sailing Peter Gilmour, the defending
champion, and Magnus Holmberg, the Swedish Match tour points leader,
were both undefeated.

Leg 5 of this challenging race sailed east to west around the world
began 11 March in Sydney. This leg takes the fleet through the Indian
Ocean to Cape Town South Africa.

It has been a brutal leg so far with several injuries to crew. Two
have been evacuated from the boats to Australian hospitals.

Current conditions are horrible. Waves measured in double digit
amounts of feet and gale force winds.

Currently LG Flatron leads Logica by 124 miles. Who knows what
effects the current weather could have on the standings.

Spring Commissioning Article: Cleaning Products
Available on line at:
http://www.torresen.com/sd/0321_ms.htm
This month's theme series topic is commissioning. This week
we look at some products that can help your boat shine before or after
launching.
Once your boat is laid up it is not often that it receives any
attention in the cleaning department. So, for many owners, the first
project of spring is to get the boat looking it's best.
You may want to start by cleaning your hull and applying a wax
to the topsides. This is often down with the boat on dry land. It
can also be done from a dinghy.
Torresen Marine's most popular wax is Boat Armor Carnuba Paste
Boat Wax. Clean the hull and remove dust and grit. Take a damp cloth
and apply wax. Then wipe down with a clean dry cloth. This will put
the shine back on your hull.
Additionally the wax contains a UV inhibitor. This will stop
sun ray based decay. Boat Armor is $ 11.78 per can.
However, if you have invested in an Awlgrip finish for you
hull you should utilize a different product. You should begin by
washing the hull down with AWLWASH which is a cleaning concentrate
mixed with water.
Once you have finished this you move onto AWLCARE. This
protects the hull and removes minor stains such as soot.
Each of these products is $ 14.95. A small amount to pay to
protect your paint job.
Perhaps your boat has a crust of dirt around the water line or
transom. If so get yourself some Zing. Mix with water and apply to
get rid of this form of dirt. Use carefully as Zing is a strong acid.
Zing is $ 8.60 per bottle.
One of the most common spring tasks is giving your decks a
thorough scrubbing. For that purpose we offer Simple Green. Simple
Green is non-toxic and biodegradable. It has purposes beyond your
decks including laundry and your galley area. $ 6.69 for a bottle of
this versatile cleaner.
Our final product is one you may want to wait to use after
launching. Nothing can ruin a sail faster than a foul odor from
the bilge.
To clean your bilge, pick up some Boat Armor bilge cleaner.
Pour the cleaner in the bilge. Then take a sail. The natural motion
of the boat distributes the cleaner. If your bilge has no oil or fuel
residue simply pump your bilge and your cleaning is done. $ 7.98 for
a bottle of this cleaner.
Besides the products above Torresen Marine has a full aisle
of other cleaning products along with towels, brushes and more.

Racing News: The Race
Available on line at:
http://www.torresen.com/sd/0321_ms.htm

At the beginning of the week three boats remained. They were trying
to complete their circumnavigation by finishing in Marseilles France.

That number is now two. Warta-Poplpharma suffered damage to her port
hull deck forward of the main beam. After the damage the Polish team
headed to Fortaleza Brazil to make repairs.

Ahead, Team Adventure is nearing Gibraltar and the Mediterranean. The
race class cat is 60 miles off Gibraltar. An end of the week finish
at the Old Port in Marseilles France looks likely.

Tail ender Team Legato looks unlikely to finish by the 2 April
deadline. If they don't make it they will not be considered a
finisher in The Race.
