and observations by Ike Stephenson, Marine
Informationist. It concentrates on the home waters
of Around the World of Sailing, Lake Michigan and
Muskegon Lake.
************* Studies and Observations #1
Notes on the Visiting Saltie Happy River.
Yellow hulled with a homeport of
Amsterdam. Men on deck in matching yellow
coveralls. A big boat watching crowd. Many
equipped with binocs for a better view. A family
picnicking and boat watching. Ship down by stern.
Cargo being worked out of forward hatch.
Superstructure and bridge are all aft.
Looks like 4 stories.
Folding hydraulic hatches. These have a look of
concrete to them. 2 cranes on deck. These can be
operated by remote control.

Muskegon Web Cams
An offshoot of the Internet is the web cam.
Muskegon has scenic and photogenic parts.
There are 2 cameras on the Lake Michigan side.
One is from the Great Lakes Environmental Research
Laboratory. It's located at:
http://www.glerl.noaa.gov/data/now/lmfs/met1/.
Good views of the Muskegon Channel and a look at
conditions on Lake Michigan.
The other Lake Michigan side cam is a new addition.
This cam is at
http://www.mlive.com/beachcam/muskegon/.
You can control it and get a variety of views of
the Pere Marquette beach area.
On the Muskegon Lake side is the Torresen Marine
Web Cam. Located at
http://www.torresen.com/web_cam/ our camera gives
you a look at part of our marina basin, the Bluffton
mooring area plus a look to the north on Muskegon
Lake.
Right on the Muskegon Channel is the WZZM TV Lake
Shore Tower Cam. The view I saw can best be
described as 'where the Silversides isn't'.
The Silversides is at sea again for movie filming
purposes. See this view at
http://www.wzzm13.com/lakeshorecam.asp.
No longer can you necessarily escape to the lake
or the beach. On the other hand if you are indoors
bound you can get a good look at what you are
missing.

Studies and Observations #2
Last Thursday was the Summer Solstice in the
Northern Hemisphere. In Muskegon the sun was to
rise @ 0505 and set @ 2028. This a gain of 30
minutes of sunlight from 1 month earlier.
Except that in Muskegon the sunlight part of the
solstice was just a rumor. Clouds covered the sky
all day making it perhaps the longest cloudiest day
of the year!

Lake Michigan Home to an Open 50
Milwaukee WI is home to Everest Horizontal which
plans to compete in the next Around Alone Race.
Milwaukee sailor Tim Kent has acquired an Antrim
designed Open 50 originally from California.
The boat is typical of the Open type around the
world boats. Beam is 14 feet with a draft of 12
feet. The displacement is 16,000 pounds. There's
6200 pounds of ballast and 4200 pounds of water
ballast can be taken on to power the boat up.
Everest Horizontal is an interesting name.
Traditionally Around Alone has used the fact that
more people have been in space than have sailed
around the world alone. With proliferation of
guided climbs up Mount Everest it's certainly true
that completing a horizontal water bound
circumnavigation is more difficult than getting up
Everest.
Tim Kent recently sailed the Everest Horizontal in
the Chicago to Mackinac solo race. His time of 2
days 4 hours 32 minutes and 32 seconds made him
first to finish. He was beaten by an F-25 multi
hull on corrected time. First to finish in the
Port Huron to Mackinac version of the race was
Tango in 2 days 11 hours 57 minutes and 29 seconds.

Everest Horizon is scheduled to sail the Queens Cup,
the Chicago and Port Huron Mac's on the Trans
Superior on the Great Lakes. After that it' s off
to the Atlantic for more Around Alone preparation.
