Short Tack: America's Cup $ Issues
Available on line at:
http://www.torresen.com/atwos/2001/ap/0418/st.htm
Since completion of the last America's Cup much has been
made of the involvement of the 'B's' as in billionaires. Recent
news reports indicate that even a 'B' campaign is not without
problems.
For example, One World Challenge, backed by Craig Mccaw
who has contributed $ 30 million of the planned $ 80 million
budget, due to a downturn in the stock market, One World will
be seeking outside funding. Mccaw always planned to look for
outside help, but now there is no choice in this matter.
Team New Zealand, the current Cup holders, were
perceived to be at a disadvantage in the money wars. This
perception may change soon. Computer software firm SAP is
thought to be coming onboard as a Team New Zealand backer.
SAP co-chairman Hasso Platner is an accomplished yachtsman with
his string of boats named Morning Glory.
This is just one reversal on the long complicated,
global road to the on the water America's Cup final in 2003.
Short Tack: Ranger 33
Available on line at:
http://www.torresen.com/atwos/2001/ap/0418/st.htm
'Embarcadero' was built by Ranger Yachts, builders of a series
of successful racer/cruisers from 23 feet up. Ranger is out of
business, but their fine boats still sail.
'Embarcadero' has been upgraded over the years. A Martec prop
takes the power from a reliable Atomic 4. Roller furling adds
to ease of handling. If you want to race, spinnakers and gear
are included.
