Readers Write
From Peru, we received the following inquiry: "I would like to
buy a play station 2 sailing game/simulator." Well, to the best of my
knowledge despite their sponsorship of Steve Fossett's Race Class
catamaran there is no such game. Perhaps those more familar with the
playstation system can provide more info?
Jeff Banning wrote: "I am trying to find information about the
date of the Chicago to Mac Race for 2001." The Chicago Mac date
(July 14) along with many other Great Lakes sailing dates can be found
at: http://www.torresen.com/calendar/c1.htm. Additionally keep an eye
on our site dedicated to the Chicago Mac at:
http://www.chicagomackinac.com.
Recently, noted designer Alan Andrews submitted his well done
website to our Intersail directory. His site is at:
http://www.andrewsyacht.com/.
I then got a chance to ask him what features might show up in
his design for American sailor Brad Van Liew's new Open 60. Alan
responded, "we looked at a lot of configurations and the best is
canting keel, twin dagger boards, centerline water ballast both
forward and aft and twin rudders. The rudders should be retractable
and easily replaceable. Also, with the rig, the best is a relatively
small sectioned rotating wing mast. We believe we can do this without
spreaders by using advanced rigging."

* CG Service
In reading the 9th District Annual Special Notice to Mariners I
came across * CG service. With this service you dial *CG on your
mobile phone and are connected to the nearest Coast Guard Unit.
I contacted both Vorizon and Century Tel, the primary wireless
phone provides in our home waters about this feature.
Century Tel stated that * CG is not available from them.
Verizon's response was slightly more optomistic. They state they are
going to be implementing it, but don't have a solid time frame.
Whatever your home port it's a good idea for you to contact
your mobile phone company and inquire about its availability. This
will give you another option in the safety toolkit.

Links of the Week
Amongst the recent submissions to our Intersail directory at
http://www.torresen.com/1.htm are a pair of interesting and
interactive ones.
Boattalk located at http://www.boattalk.com offers you the
ability to read sailboat reviews written by owners of the boats
themselves. Also, you can submit your own review for fellow sailors
to consider.
Sailboat Excahnge at http://sailboatexchange.com/ offers an
alternative to chartering sailboats. This site offers you the chance
to sail out of your area simply by exchanging use of your boat with
others.
Both sites offer an interactive approach to different aspects
of sailing and are worth considering.
