Taking Home a Memorable Experience Regardless of Finish

Sally Barkow of Nashotah, Wis. and her crew of Amanda Callahan (Canton, Mass.), Debbie Capozzi (Bayport, N.Y.) and Annie Lush (Poole, U.K.) have won one of the world’s most prestigious women’s sailing regattas: US SAILING’s 2007 Rolex International Women’s Keelboat Championship. Sailing as Team 7, the four women topped a 39-boat fleet that included many impressive competitors such as skipper Cory Sertl (Rochester, N.Y.), a Rolex Yachtswoman of the Year, and skipper Anna Tunnicliffe (Plantation, Fla.), an Olympic hopeful in the Laser Radial class, who finished second and third overall, respectively. Racing took place on Galveston Bay and was hosted at the Houston Yacht Club, in Shoreacres, Texas.

Junior Women Sailors Take the “Next Step”

LaPorte, Texas – The 25 young women sailors gathered at Houston Yacht Club this weekend had one thought in mind: To learn as much about sailing, the sport they love. Through the Next Step to Rolex Program they had the opportunity of a lifetime, spending two days in the classroom and on the water, learning from high-level coaches. The girls, age 14-17, flew into LaPorte, Texas from all parts of the country – representing nine States from as far away as Coronado, Calif. and Rochester, N.Y. – to take part in the core outreach program of US SAILING’s Rolex International Women’s Keelboat Championship. Led by Joanne Kolius and her husband John Kolius, an Olympic Silver Medalist, the weekend featured all-day clinics with the focus on making the transition from dinghies to keelboats. (more…)

Women’s Championship Fleet Heads to Houston

La Porte, Texas – With the November 1 entry deadline closed for US SAILING’s upcoming Rolex International Women’s Keelboat Championship (Rolex IWKC), 41 international teams representing four countries and 12 U.S. states have entered including two-time defending champion Sally Barkow (Nashotah, Wis.) with her Team 7. The biennial regatta, celebrating its 12th anniversary of offering women of all abilities the opportunity for top-level competition, is scheduled for November 14-17 and hosted by the Houston Yacht Club in LaPorte, Texas. The 11-race series features evening social activities and culminates with the traditional Rolex gala and awards presentation where a Rolex timepiece will be awarded to the winning boat’s skipper. Spithill Wins Rolex Osprey Cup

St. Petersburg, Florida – Australia’s Katie Spithill won the 2007 Rolex Osprey Cup – one of only two ISAF Grade 1 women’s match racing events in the U.S. – held at the St. Petersburg Yacht Club (St. Petersburg, Fla.), from October 18-21. Along with crew Nina Curtis, Jessica Eastwell and Kristen Short, Spithill defeated Giulia Conti (Toscolano Maderno, Italy) in three straight matches in the ‘first to win three’ format. In the semi-final round Spithill knocked out another pre-race favorite #4 ranked Sally Barkow (Nashotah, Wis.), a two-time world champion. In the other semi-final match, Conti defeated Liz Baylis (San Rafael, Calif.), a past Rolex Yachtswoman of the Year and the current U.S. Women’s Match Racing champion. Barkow, the 2005 Rolex Yachtswoman of the Year, went on to defeat Baylis in the round to decide third and fourth place, or the ‘petit-final’ as it is called in match racing, with a score of 3-1.
