According to the Chicago Yacht Club, the 2009 Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac is shaping up to be one of the largest in the history of the race. They have received over 130 entries in the first week alone, and fully expect a sellout crowd this July.
This month, Chicago Yacht Club will be hosting a number of fun and informative events relating to the 101st Race. Specifically:
1. Mac Stories Night — On Friday, March 6, 2009, Chicago Yacht Club and the Island Goats Sailing Society will host “Mac Stories Night” at our Belmont Station. 2009 marks the IGSS’ 50th anniversary, and this year’s “Stories Night” will feature several legendary Island Goats. Come hear true stories and tall tales of the Mac. The bar will be open throughout the event, and the Club will serve an optional light dinner, consisting of soup, salad, and sandwiches for between $12-$15 (tax and gratuity included). Dinner begins at 6:00 PM, and story telling will begin at 7:00 PM.
2. First Mac Seminar — On Saturday, March 7, 2009, Chicago Yacht Club will host a “First Mac” Seminar at our Monroe Street Station. To date, over 70 new Mac skippers have requested invitations to the 101st Race. This seminar will provide first time participants with information on the invitation request process, the Race website and on-line documents, getting a rating certificate, safety requirements, and the schedule of pre-race and post-race events. Several winning skippers and Mac Committee members will be on hand to answer questions and share insights. The seminar is open to all, and costs $15 per person. A continental breakfast will be served beginning at 8:30 AM and the seminar itself will run from 9:00 AM to 11:30 AM.
3. Safety at Sea Seminar — On Saturday, March 14, Chicago Yacht Club and US Sailing will jointly host a Safety at Sea Seminar at our Belmont Station. The seminar runs from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, costs $95 ($5 discount for US Sailing members), and includes a continental breakfast and box lunch. A cash bar will be available after the seminar. John Bonds and Ron Trossbach, two of the top names in sailing safety, will moderate this event. If you plan to race to Mackinac with us this year, we strongly recommend attending this seminar at least once every five years. Seminar topics include; medical, first-aid and seasickness prevention; the differences between SOLAS and other visual distress signals; and boat and crew preparations for offshore sailing and the Race to Mackinac.
Seating is limited for all of these events, and reservations are required. Contact Chicago Yacht Club Front Desk at 312-861-7777 to make your reservations.
