Podium Place for Pirates
Paul Cayard (USA) and his team of Pirates racing the Black Pearl claimed the third spot on the podium today when they finished leg three of the Volvo Ocean Race in Wellington, New Zealand, 50 minutes and nine seconds after the winner, movistar (Bouwe Bekking) at 15:59:35 local time, 02:59:35 GMT.
After missing out on leg one from Vigo to Cape Town, and still suffering problems with their keel mechanism on leg two to Melbourne, the Pirates came back with a vengeance, finishing in second place in the Melbourne in-port race. Today’s fine result shows that this team is now up to speed and a force to be reckoned with.
After clearing customs, Cayard commented, “We’re pretty happy with our result, but we were aiming to win, so we’re not completely satisfied. We are gaining momentum all the time, and we are pleased to be having this kind of consistency on the podium.”
The next boat to finish will be Brasil 1 (Torben Grael).
