1998 Outright Record Set

100th Anniversary Chicago Mac Race
The 2nd of the Great Lakes ‘Mac’ races is now
complete. The 300 boat fleet raced from Chicago at
the foot of Lake Michigan to Mackinac Island, a distance
of 333 miles.
The fleet saw a steady breeze push them up the lake
mostly under spinnaker. The results show that in general
the bigger the rig the better the result.
While the breeze was consistent, it lightened up
enough that the big rigs were able to get to more of the breeze
and go faster longer than smaller compeitors.
The first boat to reach Mackinac was Steve Fosett’s 60 foot
catamaran, Stars and Stripes. She scorched all existing course
record in 18 hours 50 minutes and 32 seconds. The first mono
hull in was Sayonara, the ILC 80. She posted an elapsed time of
25 hours 52 mintues and 48 seconds. This was a scant 2 minutes
and 4 seconds off Pied Pipers famed 1987 run.
Whether Stars and Stripes time is recognized by the Chicago
Yacht Club is still not clear. Also, the World Sailing Speed
Record Council is considering how to properly recognize
Fosett’s record.
Corrected time winners were again bigger boats. In the
IMS fleet RX- Sight a 72 footer skippered by Ludde Ingvall
corrected 1st overall, with a corrected time of 25 hours
50 minutes and 9 seconds, a healthy several hour margin
over the Santa Cruz 70 Mongoose.
In the PHRF fleet Bacchant, a classsic 75 square meter
owned and skippered by Jerome Sullivan of Milwuakee, was 1st
overall. Bacchant scored her win by less than a minute over
