Stars and Stripes 1st to Finish

Report from Mackinac Island Sunday, July 21 11:50:28 p.m. EDT

Multihull 60 foot Catamaran Stars and Stripes, sail number 1, owned by Steve Fossett, has crossed the finish line at Mackinac Island at 11:50:28p.m. EDT. As a non-competing entry in an exhibition class of multihulls, Fossett’s boat is not recognized as the official first to finish. The boat will also not receive the First-to-Finish award. The boat’s overall lapsed time of 29:35:28 does not break the race’s record lapsed time of 25:50:44 set in 1987 by Pied Piper.

Steve Fossett of Chicago, is known world wide for his competitive spirit including his around the world hot air ballooning and off shore sail boat racing.
