Star Clippers To Build World’s Largest Sailing Ship

MIAMI – Star Clippers has been in discussions with shipyards to build a new five-masted vessel for the line for delivery in 2010. Set to be the largest, most expensive sailing vessel ever constructed, the 7,400-gross-ton barque is modeled on France II, which at 5,000 gross tons was the world’s largest sailing ship when it was launched in 1912.

Youth Development Sailing Team Applications Now Being Accepted

Portsmouth, R.I. – Applications for the 2008 US Elite Youth Development Sailing Team are now being accepted. Launched by US SAILING in January 2007, the Elite Youth Development Team was created for young athletes who have been identified as future Olympic prospects.

Rolex Yachtsman and Yachtswoman of the Year Awards – Nominating Now

PORTSMOUTH, R.I. – With the change of seasons follows the opportunity to recognize those U.S. sailors who have collected impressive regatta results at home and abroad in 2007. Starting today, US SAILING is accepting nominations for its Rolex Yachtsman and Yachtswoman of the Year awards, widely acknowledged as the foremost individual sailing honors in the nation. Through November 30, 2007, every member of US SAILING may nominate the male and female sailor they think has turned in the most outstanding on-the-water performance during the 2007 calendar year. Nominations can be made online through US SAILING’s website at www.ussailing.org/awards/rolex.

Dates Set for 2008 Youth World Qualifier Regatta

Portsmouth, R.I. – US SAILING’s 2008 Youth World Qualifier Regatta, a new multi-class event that will determine the sailors who will represent the U.S. at the 2008 Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF (International Sailing Federation) World Championship, will be hosted this January by the Alamitos Bay Yacht Club of Long Beach, California.

King Harbor Captures Prince of Wales Championship

Newport, R.I. – The King Harbor Yacht Club team of Brian Angel (Manhattan Beach, Calf.), Payson Infelise (Newport Beach, Calif.) and Michael Delanty (Redondo Beach, Calif.) were crowned winners of the U.S. Match Racing Championship for the Prince of Wales Bowl today, after four days of racing in Sonars off Newport (R.I.).

Winners Crowned at U.S. Sailing Championships

San Diego, Calif. (September 16, 2007) – After four days of racing, winners were crowned at US SAILING’s U.S. Men’s Sailing Championship for the Clifford D. Mallory Cup and U.S. Women’s Sailing Championship for the Mrs. Charles Francis Adams Cup, hosted September 11-15 by the Southwestern Yacht Club (San Diego, Calif.). Local San Diego sailors Brian Camet, Daniel Camet, and Alex Camet captured the Mallory Cup, and
Lake Michigan skipper Elizabeth Altman (Chicago, Ill.) racing with Nancy Heffernan (St. Louis, Mo.) Vickie Matthews (Chicago, Ill.) and Marie Hansson (Chicago, Ill.) won the Adams Cup. Competitors from throughout the U.S.—who qualified via regional ladder elimination events, or were selected by resume—raced Etchells at both events, sponsored by Rolex Watch U.S.A. and Dry Creek Vineyard.
