True 1D48 Team Sets NEW YORK, NY -- Dawn Rileys Americas Cup syndicate America True has won the 1D48 Newport to New York offshore race, hitting a top speed of 19.7 knots during their 13 hour, 39 minute and 9 second trip. This record shaved over 7 hours off last year's recorded time. America Trues Tactician Leslie Egnot said, "Throughout the race, each member of the crew focused on their department, and Dawn and Jeff drove the boat really well. Crew work and seamanship were the key to this race, as control of the boat was critical in the really big waves. Awesome white water was everywhere, filling up the cockpit, spraying above the boom and burying the bow - it was just awesome." America True gained their lead early on, and had stretched it to several miles before darkness. With a strong northeasterly breeze at the start, each team set spinnakers that flew for most of the overnight race. The entire fleet ran downwind for several miles, and America True worked their way to the outside edge of the course following Abracadabra. Using intense focus and silent concentration, America True slid up behind Abracadabra, making a move to pass her to windward. After America True was able to surf within three boat lengths of Abracadabra, Dr. Andrews team gybed away to clear their air, but sailed into less wind and fell behind. America True never relinquished the lead. The fleet gybed several times as they sailed along, one and ½ miles off the shore of Long Island. At 3:00 a.m., America True entered New York Harbor, and fought a difficult tide and light airs, allowing the rest of the fleet to make up time. America True is the first truly coed challenge for the America's Cup, and is led by the first woman CEO in America's Cup history, Dawn Riley. Under the flag of the San Francisco Yacht Club, America True is devoted to making the America's Cup more accessible to all, and will endeavor to win the America's Cup by combining the best talent, skill and experience available. |
