Some call it the spar fly, some the wind indicator, some the chicken.
Call it what you will the Windex tells you where the wind is coming
from. Once you know where the wind is coming from you can then
harness it. In this came the wind direction necessarily comes
before the propulsion. Every sailboat should have a reliable way of
reading the wind, and the Davis Instruments Windex is one of the best.
Davis Instruments has produced an interesting variation on the
venerable and popular Windex. They now offer two new products in
their Windex line. One is the Windex10.sport aimed at small boats
and dinghies. The other is the 'J Base' which comes with the Windex
10.Sport and can added as an option to the familiar Windex 15.

| The Davis Instruments J Bracket | The J-bracket in side mount configuration |
The J-base is made of glass filled polycarbonate. The key is that
it gives you three ways to mount a Windex. The mounting options
provided by the J Base are: side, top or front. You save 15 grams
when you use this base with a standard Windex.
The Windex sport has a 10" vane. Otherwise it is similar to the
traditional Windex. One notable difference is weight. The
Windex10.Sport weighs 1.2 ounces, while the Windex 15 weighs 3.6
ounces. Sailors know there is not a better place to save weight
than at the top of your mast.

The Davis Windex10.Sport with the J Bracket in side mount deployement.
The Windex 10.Sport sells for $ 39.95, the J base for $ 9.95. Both
products will be available from the Torresen Marine Ships Store.
According to Davis, the J base will not be in circulation until after
the 1st of the year.
