The (U)tility (P)ower (S)ail from Doyle Sails is intended for the
cruising market. This all purpose sail is meant to be used in light air
upwind sailing and when reaching and running in all breezes. It is
intended to cover the gap in your sail inventory between the genoa and
spinnaker.

The UPS differs in shape from other sails. Essentially it is elliptical
in shape rather than triangular. The elliptical shape provides more
power. Yet, the bigger roach does not need battens. This means the
sail can be furled. The UPS is set on a stand alone Vectran furling
line, which also provides a luff. It can be utilized in a wide range
of conditions. Upwind in light air it gives you the power to push
through lumpy seas. Running it flies like a spinnaker, except without
the pole and collapsing.

The UPS is an example of how high level technology helps all sailors.
Both the UPS and the North Sails products discussed later, are based
on sails developed for the Whitbread Round the World Race. We all
remember the videos of bowmen going up the rig to strop off the huge
Code 0's. Doyle has managed to give us the benefits and greatly
simplify the sail.
