Ronstan has produced a ratchet block with a twist. Ratchet blocks 
are a familiar feature, especially on smaller boats. With a typical 
ratchet block, when a certain amount of force is on the line the 
mechanism engages. This action boosts the holding power by up to 
15:1.

The twist that Ronstan brings is a feature that allows you to vary 
the load at which the ratchet engages. By twisting the post where 
the shackle attaches you can have the ratchet engage at a level which 
fits the boat, application and conditions. Ronstan calls this a 
'smart ratchet'. It could be just a well called the custom ratchet. 

Applications for this block are several. For the family Laser or 
Sunfish, strong sailors can have the ratchet engage at higher loads, 
while younger sailors can get more help from the ratchet earlier in 
the load curve. If you sail as a sail trimmer and often use ratchet 
blocks you can take a pair of smart ratchets with you. This way you 
can set the ratchet where you prefer it and reproduce the 'feel' you 
like when trimming.
