Around Alone's Americans
In the past week, two of the American lone sailors contesting
Around Alone have finished the leg, which saw them round Cape
Horn.
Last Thursday Californian Bruce Schwab sailed into Salvador
on Ocean Planet an Open 60. Schwab's leg has been
interrupted by a stop in the Falkland Islands to repair his
boom. After finishing Bruce titled an update 'Finally
Reached the Ice Cream'.
On Saturday Milwaukee sailor Tim Kent finished Leg 4 on
Everest Horizontal. For the 3rd time Kent gained a 2nd
place.
Bruce and Tim have a fair amount in common as they are
American sailors sailing American designed and built boats
in Around Alone. Also, they could both use more money for
their campaigns.
They've also been just slightly busy. Tim Kent says, "Since
April last year I have taken a sum total of 36 hours off."
Bruce Schwab had a slight bit more of relaxation, "Since
February last year I have taken a week off." still pretty
low. True to form Kent wrote, "Gilles and I walked the
whole boat yesterday afternoon to create our worklist."
Both sailors have a final leg to sail back to America
beginning 13 April, likely without the benefit of much down
time.

Theme Article: Mast Wiring
We'll finish March's theme articles on commissioning with a
short, practical, time and effort saving tip. The tip
applies to sailboats that are stored mast down.
As you prep the mast for stepping, by putting the spreaders
on, running halyards, checking turnbuckles, etc. don't forget
to check the wiring.
If you have a mast head light, steaming light etc. grab a
battery hook the appropriate wires to power and see if the
lights work. If not, you can save time and a trip up the
mast by replacing bulbs or correcting any other issues
before stepping.
