49er North American's
Soling Worlds on the Great Lakes
The olympic Soling class is staging
its world championship regatta on the Great
Lakes. Milwuakee Yacht Club is the host and
the sailing is being done on Lake Michigan.
There have been 3 races completed in
two days of racing. 10 races are scheduled.
The leading team so far is Calafat/Galmes
/Iglesias of Spain. The team of Pichugin /
Korotkov / TImokhov of Ukraine is 2nd. 3rd is
Rey / Burnham / Brenner of the United States.
The racing in this regatta is very
tough and consistent finishes are hard to
find. All of the boats in the top 10 with
the exceptions of the leaders have at least
1 double digit finish. Striving for
consistent finishes should win this regatta.

Open 60 Team Group 4 Toppled
They say the hardest part of the
Around Alone race is getting to the starting
line. This saying was proven Monday in
Charleston SC.
It was in Charleston at Delta Marine that
Team Group was knocked off it cradle by a storm.
There was minor damage to the boat.
An attempt was made to secure Group 4
as the storm approached. Group 4 was lashed
to a one-and-a-half ton compressor, a two-ton
cement block, and a large dock bollard.
During the storm the line running to
the bollard gave way, and down went the boat.
Race officials expect Group 4 to be ready for
the September 26th start.
Around Alone News and Notes
Today marks 24 days to the start of the race in
Charleston SC. Needless to say the pressure of
final preparations is hitting the fleet.
England- Around Alone Veteran Niah
Vaughn's race is over. Vaughn has dropped out
after getting a late start for Charleston.
England- Andy Darwent's Heart of England
is afloat. The boat was launched in Plymouth
England. This is home port of British sailor
Pete Goss. Goss has kindly leant Darwent work
shop space, sails and lots of advice and
encouragement. Darwent hopes to sail for
Charleston ASAP.
Charleston- Neal Petersen of
www.no-barriers.com continues both sailing
preparations and his work with his
educational foundation. On September 4th Neal
will present an educational satellite TV
broadcast called: No Barriers: Quest for '98.
During the broadcast school children will
be able to interact with Neal via a toll
free phone number.
Charleston- Robin Davie's 48 footer
is still not sailing. Robin is under
extreme time pressure as he still needs to
make his 2,000 mile qualifying voyage.
Atlantic Ocean- Josh Hall in
underway on his trans atlantic voyage to
Charleston. His boat is a new Finot 60
with a striking green paint scheme. He has
a crew of 4 on board. Hall indicates he is
very pleased with Gartmore Investments
performance and has only minor problems
to work on solving.
Portsmouth RI- Here Around Alone
mariner Isabelle Autissier who will sail
PRB in Class I is installing a new
flotation system. This system is a
balloon that grows to 283 cubic feet when
inflated. If PRB turtles in a storm
Autissier inflates the balloon. The balloon
is located in the aft section of the boat.
The theory is water would flow to the bow
and thus give the keel enough torque to
right the boat.

49er North Americans
The 1998 49er North Americans were
sailed in Toronto Canada at the Royal
Canadian Yacht Club from August 28th to
August 30th.
Again, West Michigan sailors Chad
Hough and David Fox were entered. They
finished 17th out of the 23 entries. The
winning boat was sailed by Johnathan and
Charlies McKee of Seattle Washington.
Second were Morgan Larson and
Kevin Hall. The margin of victory was
1 point after the teams 2 worst scores
were dropped. In 3rd was world champion
Chris Nicholson with his new sheet hand
Ed Smyth. Nicholson managed to win 5 of
the 15 races, but wasn't consistent enough
to gain 1st place.
Next on the scheudle for Chad and
David and the 49er fleet is this weekend's
East Coast Championships in Newport Rhode Island.
