Figaro Solo Leg 2
Jean le Cam, one of the most
experienced Figaro Solo skippers, steered
his 30 foot Beneteau Figaro "Guy Cotten
Chattawak" to victory in the early hours
of this morning (Sunday). At 0529 (65 hours,
19 minutes after the start) he crossed
the line off Ile de Groix, having overtaken
Drouglazet and Desjoyeaux in the closing stages
during the night. The intensity of the
racing has been incredible, as the fleet
raced across the English Channel, and
down the Brittany coast - home territory
for Le Cam.
	Ireland's Damian Foxall (Barlo
Plastics) confirmed his place at the top
of the fleet, with a fantastic 11th place,
having raced the whole leg in touch with
the leaders.
	Michel Desjoyeaux's second place
ahead of Drouglazet maintains his position
at the top of the overall positions
(classified by overall elapsed time of the
two first legs).
Last Friday saw one of the Figaro
sailors have to abandon ship. Bruno Joudren
hit the rocks off the Welsh coast and sank.
Joudren climbed up on the sea side cliffs
and was rescued via helicopter.
Leg 3 will take the fleet across the Bay
of Biscay to Gijon, Spain.

Explorer Smashes North Pacific Record
	Sunday August 16th at 15 46 40 San
Francisco time the maxi cat Explorer finished
its Yokohama to San Francisco record run. This
broke the old record held by Steve Fosset and
his tri Lakota.
	To put Explorer's performance in
perspective, the previous record was 19 Days
15 hours and 18 mintues for an average speed
of 10.92 knots. Explorers new record time is:
14 days 17 hours and 22 minutes at an average
speed of 14.6 knots.
Explorer had an international crew of
7. There were sailors from the follwing
countries on board: France, Japan, Italy,
Australia and the United States.
Explorer had a voyage that was fast,
yet still had its moments of variable breeze.
The first 24 hours of the voyage they logged
nearly 400 miles. This give them a 121 mile
lead on Fossett and they never gave this up.
By the third day Explorer had a 264 mile
lead on Lakota. During the 5th day the first
setback occured, At daybreak while running off
before a storm the webbing which holds the main
halyard block on the mast broke. Two hours were
lost repairing this.
As they crossed the 180 degree meridian
and set a spinnaker they had a 855 mile lead. At
this point the crew felt they would be in 'Frisco
by the 15th.
However they had a 36 hour battle with
a high pressure/ligh air zone ahead. On the
morning of the 15th the breeze picked up and
Explorer scorched off for the finish line.
They finished Sunday the 16th.
Although a fast time, skipper Bruno
Peyron already has a feel for who will break it.
It will be one of the boats that will be built
for The Race 2000. In fact, in a converation
between a mid pacific Bruno Peyron and Steve
Fossett who was then airborne in his balloon,
they agreed that Fosset's huge catamaran
will likely be the record breaker.
This potential 117 foot record breaking
cat is currently being built at Cookson's in
New Zealand. Also, under contruction is a 123
foot aeoro rigged cat for British mariner Pete
Goss. Finally French sailor Laurent Bourgnon
has a 123.5 foot catamarn under construction.
So, Explorer has shattered the record.
It looks like the boat being built for the race
should be bigger faster and more fun to watch.

GLSOL Contest- We have a winner
Ned Strain of Wilmette IL was the
winner. He predicted that Explorer would finish
at 1533 SF time on Saturday. Well, sailors
don't have ETA's they have destinations right ?
No matter Explorer finished and Ned was
closest. Ned will soon be receiving the sharp
and distinctive hat that he requested.
Ensign Nationals
	The Ensign National Championship regatta
is currently being sailed. Location is Menominee
Michigan and the bay of Green Bay. Host for the
event is the M&M Yacht Club.
So far two races have been completed.
37 Ensigns went under starters orders. Winds
were strong, from the North East at up to
25 knots. Large and lumpy seas accompanied
the breeze.
In race one three yachts had men
overboard. None of these sailrs were wearing
life jackets, but all were recovered safely.
In one case this cost a boat 8 places.
Three protests were pending from these
2 races. 2 races each are on the schedule
for Wednesday and Thursday.
After 2 races home town sailor Jim Beyer
is leading after finishing 2nd and 1st. Next is
Dean Snider with 4.75 points, and Tom LaBelle with
7 points.
The forcast for today's racing is
south easterly to southweterly winds diminished
in strength from the 25 knots on Wed.
