100th Anniversary Chicago Mac Race
The 2nd of the Great Lakes 'Mac' races is now
complete. The 300 boat fleet raced from Chicago at
the foot of Lake Michigan to Mackinac Island, a distance
of 333 miles.
The fleet saw a steady breeze push them up the lake
mostly under spinnaker. The results show that in general
the bigger the rig the better the result.
While the breeze was consistent, it lightened up
enough that the big rigs were able to get to more of the breeze
and go faster longer than smaller compeitors.
The first boat to reach Mackinac was Steve Fosett's 60 foot
catamaran, Stars and Stripes. She scorched all existing course
record in 18 hours 50 minutes and 32 seconds. The first mono
hull in was Sayonara, the ILC 80. She posted an elapsed time of
25 hours 52 mintues and 48 seconds. This was a scant 2 minutes
and 4 seconds off Pied Pipers famed 1987 run.
Whether Stars and Stripes time is recognized by the Chicago
Yacht Club is still not clear. Also, the World Sailing Speed
Record Council is considering how to properly recognize
Fosett's record.
Corrected time winners were again bigger boats. In the
IMS fleet RX- Sight a 72 footer skippered by Ludde Ingvall
corrected 1st overall, with a corrected time of 25 hours
50 minutes and 9 seconds, a healthy several hour margin
over the Santa Cruz 70 Mongoose.
In the PHRF fleet Bacchant, a classsic 75 square meter
owned and skippered by Jerome Sullivan of Milwuakee, was 1st
overall. Bacchant scored her win by less than a minute over
Sayonara.
The complete list of class winners follows:
Exhibition Class Z: Adagio Mead Gougeoun

Atlantic Alone- Nearing the finish
The 5 boat fleet has continued progress across
the Atlantic. With the current pace, Fila should finish
by Sunday with all boats expected in Charleston by a
week from Saturday, August 1st.
Since last Wednesday the fleet has experienced an overall
uptick in wind. Still, up until the weekend was spend in
frustrating light air conditions. On Saturday
J.P. Mouligne e-mailed the following from Cray Valley:
"Not much I can do except keep Cray Valley
moving at all time and hope for the wind to come back."
However, by Monday, Mike Golding and Group 4's
situtation was looking up: At last! a day with some wind,
flat seas, blue skies, with trade wind cloud formations and
a gentle 12kts of breeze from the NE.
Although the weather has changed, the order of the
fleet hasn't. Fila and Giovanni Soldini still lead. As of
Wednesday morning he was 676 miles from Charleston.
At this point he says, "I'm sailing with the big, light genoa
and can even top nine knots despite the lack of wind." ETA
for Fila is Sunday morning. His Class I rival Group 4 has not
kept up to his record setting pace. Golding has suffered a
blown spinnaker, and broken cooking stove and is 1455 miles
from the finish with an ETA of midday July 31.
Class II is still lead by Cray Valley. She is 1546 miles out.
ETA is midday July 31. 2nd in Class II is Magellan Alpha
and Mike Garside. At one point, Magellan Alpaha looked like
it was all hooked up to pass by Cray Valley. As he caught up
Garside chose to hold his westerly heading rather than flopping
going south. It backfired and he later e-mailed: "Well, this
morning found me rapidly running out of air." Magellan is
1705 miles from the finish, with an eta of 1 August. Finally
Shuten-dohji IIwith skipper Saito is still by far the most northern
boat in the fleet, with a distance to finish of 1801 miles.

s2 9.1 News
	The s2 9.1 association has 48 boat-owning dues paying
folks enrolled. A very good number considering only 128
boats were built.
The next stop on the s2 Great Lakes Championship tour
is coming up Aug 1-2. It's like a miniature NOOD without the
"level" classes. It is sponsored by Sailing Magazine.
