Brian 'BJ' Caldwell plans for next
circumnavigation
September 1996- Brian Caldwell becomes
the first person under 21 to sail around the
world alone. This acheivment was not enough
for Brian. Being a driven person, his mind
had already invented the next goal.
This next goal was to be the youngest non
stop circumnavigator. He had the experience, he
just needed a boat.
At first it seemed as though he had a boat.
However, the Columbia 50 came with stipulations.
Brian had to arrange for insurance. Imagine
approaching your local insurance agent.
I need insurance. You do? For what? Well,
I am sailing around the entire globe, by myself
with out stopping. The non stop solo aspect
made his endeavour uninsurable.
Next a fellow Hawaiin stepped up with the
loan of a North Atlantic 29. Seemingly a great
boat for his voyage. This boat was inspired by
pioneering single handed Blondie Hassler. It's
single sail junk rig was simple. The hull was
stout.
As Brian trialed her off Hawaii, flaws
showed up. When fully laden the boat was
underpowered. Further Brain could see the
junk rig jibing over, breaking battens as it
flew across in a whopping Southern Ocean gale.
Brian realized he had hoped for more
than the North Atlantic 29 could deliver. He
learned a lot and has moved on.
Part of his learning experience has
been with Bruno Peyron on his record breaking
catamaran. On Explorer he sailed from Hawaii
to Tahiti, continuing to harbor his dream.
At this point Brian has all of the
supplies and equipment that he needs. What
he doesn't have is a boat. He's looking for
a boat between 35 & 50 feet. He's looking
for a sturdy bluewater sloop such as a Baltic,
Swan or Pacific Seacraft. IF you feel you can
help, please contact BJ.
Brain hopes to make this circumnavigation,
and then sail the solo around the world races
under the American flag. When he finds support
for his endeavour and completes it he will become
that much of a better choice for future racing
victories.
Brian is quite willing to discuss potential
boat and sponsorship opportunities, he can be
