Key West Race Week Entries
As winter closes in sailors attention will
soon turn to the winter's Florida events. One of the
first is Key West Race week, one of the world premire
racing events.
January 18 to January 22 are the dates for
Race Week. On land Race Week 99 will have a new
location, the Historic Seaport at the Key West
Bight. For those familiar with Key West, the
Historic Seaport is the old "Key West Bight,"
but with a new look and a new name. Their
commitment to increase the number of transient
slips available to Race Week yachts, while
adding new floating slips and eventually a
designated dry sailing area, could lead to over
200 Race Week yachts being berthed in or
immediately adjacent to the Historic Seaport
in two years.
Making its Race Week debut will be the
One Design 35. Already six 1D 35's are entered
with up to 20 expected.
Other one design classes with entries
are: Farr 40 with 8, Mumm 30 with 8, and the
Melges 24 with 12.
Lake Michigan already has 3 entries
in the IMS fleet. These are: V-Max (Farr 39)
Vim (NM 43), Nitemare (Corel 45).
The PHRF has several Lake Michigan entries:
Evergreen a Sabre 42, Lunatic Fringe a Nelson Marek 36,
and Zippy a J/92.
In addition to the individual competition
there will be team competition for the Yukon Trophy.
The teams will consist of a boat from IMS 1, Farr 40
and Mumm 30 classes. Last year saw teams from Italy,
Great Britain, Down Under, Europe and Canada,
plus three US teams.
