November gale nails Lake Michigan
November 10th and 11th again saw
Lake Michigan produce a fierce and damaging
storm. It also happens that November 10th
is the 23rd anniversary of the lake freighter
Edmund Fitzgerald's sinking.
This memorable storm produced winds as
high as 95 MPH at Mackinac Island. Sustained
winds of 82 MPH were recorded on Mackinac Island.
The highest gusts recorded at other locations
were as follows:
Ludington 87 mph
Montague 85 mph
Stony Lake 84 mph
Muskegon 70 mph
Grand Haven 70 mph.
Rain fall amounts ranged from 1.5 inches
to 2.1 inches. All of the wind and rain combined
to knock out electrical service to large parts
of western Michigan. The home city of ATWOS,
Muskegon had 16,000 people without power. For
some the power outages lasted 3 to 4 days.
Along with power outages, the landscape was further
rearranged as trees were uprooted and toppled.
Muskegon residents saw a waterspout come ashore.
Unlike 1977, there were no shipping
losses. Warning was sufficient so all ships were
in harbor.
At The Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical
Society in Sault Ste. Marie, memorial service
for the Edmund Fitzgerald was held in candlelight
as power was out.
