Roxanne is First One Design 35 Champion
The Inaugural One Design 35 National
Championships regatta was sailed in Annapolis
MD October 23rd to October 25th. Seven races
were completed.
Friday was the first day of racing and
saw three races completed. Race 1 saw 15 knots
of breeze from the NNW. The course was a 4 leg
windward/leeward with 1.5 mile legs. Roxanne
took the gun in this race, a sign of things to
come. Race 2 was again won by Roxanne. The
final Friday race was 5 legs instead of 4.
The wind shifts were much bigger scrambling
the fleet. Avalanche took the gun in this race.
Saturday again saw 3 races for the 12
boat fleet. Roxanne took her 3rd bullet in
4 races by playing the right side of the course
and benefiting from better pressure. Race 5 had
.75 mile legs instead of 1 mile legs. No matter,
Roxanne again finished 1st. In the day's final
race Roxanne was beaten over the line, this
time by Excalibur.
Sunday had two races planned. However,
there was enough wind for only one. Avalanche
took her 2nd bullet of the regatta.
In the end, Roxanne's performance
easily took the title. Along with skipper
Kip Meadows, Roxanne's crew was as follows:
Ruth White, Greg Gendell, Rich Lambird,
Dobbs Davis, Rod Jabin, Ray Wulff, and
Terry Hutchinson. Kip Meadows will get a
Tiffany built perpetual trophy.
Finishing 2nd was Excalibur sailed
by Roland Arthur, with Robert Hughes'
Heartbreaker 3rd.
Hutchinson's presence shows that
despite the amatuer driver rule, the One
Design 35 still attracts top talent such
as Hutchinson, John Kolius and Dave Scott.
Also, at the regatta, two 1D35
owners received special recognition.
David Bowen owner of Hippy Chick and
Doug Crocker owner of Canvasback were
presented with 1D35 half models. This in
recognition of generously allowing their
boats to be used for marketing and promotions.
Next up for the 1D35 class - Key
West Race week, January 18 to 22. 15 to 20
1D35's are expected on the line.
Finally, Around the World of Sailing
would like to thank Annapolis Yacht Club for
their exemplarary cyber coverage of this
regatta. It was both timely and informative
and a pleasure to work with. Please check

49er Pre Olympic Trials Results
From 15 October to 18 October, Spring
Lake sailors Chad Hough and David Fox sailed
the 49er Pre Trials regatta in St. Petersburg
Florida. 16 boats were entered.
Chad and David's 7th overall (6th
American boat) show that their efforts have
resulted in a move up in competitive level.
This finish will enable them to attend the 49er
World Championship in Melbourne Australia
January 8th to January 17th.
The first day was sailed in light air.
Chad and David sailed to finishes of 3-3-8.
After this, "The positive energy was flowing
and from that point on we knew we were in the
hunt."
Day 2 saw more wind, but also quite a
bit more chop in Tampa Bay. Day 3 saw 15-20
knots and 4 races. Probably the results would
have been better, but in the day's first race
they broke a batten. This kept tearing the
sail throughout the day.
The final day saw Chad and David finish
with strong placings of 6 & 9. This finish
signifieda new level in their campaign.
By attending world level regattas they
will only improve and certainly have a realistic
shot at representing the USA in 2000. Also Chad
and David now have 2 49ers. They will utilize
this fleet in 2 boat testing next summer.
In order to be able to achieve this goal
they are undertaking a fundrasing drive. The
goal is $ 10,000 in order to get them to the
World Championhips in Australia and closer to
their goal of Sydney 2000.

On the western side of the Atlantic the
battle for the lead in Class II continues.

in New England or in Brittany, not freezing
yet but getting a little bit worse everyday."

New Atlantic Ocean Monohull Record
Maria Cha III a 45 meter ketch rigged
super yacht has broken the east to west transatlantic
record for monohulls. The official Atlantic record
course is from Ambrose Light Tower of New York to
Lizard Point Lighthouse off England. The distance
is 2925 miles.
Maria Cha III and her 22 man crew now hold
the record with a time of 8 days 23 hours 59 minutes
and 17 seconds. Maria Cha III averaged 13.6 knots.
The previous record was 11 days 13 hours 22 minutes
5 seconds/10.54 knots by Nicorette.
The record setting voyage was not without
hazard. The bow thruster door came open and could
not be closed, slowing the yacht down. Towards
the finish the main gooseneck went away. They
could only partially hoist the main after this.
The record breaking voyage gives the
Winning Edge 2000 campaign for The Race reason for
optimism. They plan to build a 53 meter Phillip
Briand designed (172 feet) mono hull for The Race
and attempts at breaking other records.

Ellen MacArthur to sail in Route du Rhum
Kingfisher, the leading European retail
group, is backing 22 year-old Ellen MacArthur in
France¹s classic Route du Rhum single-handed
trans-Atlantic yacht race, in the boat made famous
by the dramatic rescue of a French yachtsman in the
Southern Ocean last year.
Ellen, who will be the youngest competitor
and one of only four women in the 4,000 mile race from
St. Malo to Guadeloupe, will be sailing the Open 50
in which Pete Goss saved the life of Raphael Dinelli
in the Vendée Globe.
She secured the former 'Aqua Quorum¹, which will
be renamed Kingfisher for the Route du Rhum, with
Kingfisher¹s support. Ellen was to have competed in
an Open 50, which she was sailing back to Southampton
from Bermuda when she heard of the change.
She immediately diverted to Spain to fly home.
"This is fantastic news and I¹m really
grateful to Kingfisher for making it possible" said
a delighted Ellen, who saved her lunch money for
10 years to buy her first boat and who was named
the UK¹s Young Yachtperson of the Year in 1995
after sailing alone around Britain in it, aged only 19.
