Grand Traverse Melges 24 Regatta
Report by John Schumacher
The second annual Melges regatta has come
and gone in Northern Michigan. Happy to say that
the event has taken on some growth.
Friday the sailors left their boats and
headed inland. The optional event was the Buoys
and Birdies Intergalactic Challenge. This combined
18 holes of golf at Matheson Greens near Northport.
The outing began under foul skies and
moisture-laden air for most of the day.
Five boats took part in the challenge.
It was back to the Boats on Saturday
with thirteen boats for five races. After a couple
of postponements the air filled in and racing began
under sunny skies. At the leeward mark and near
the end of the day Whamo suffered a broken pole
and had to retire. Though Major Woody had a spare,
theiršs was a newer pole and would not fit Whamo.
Hot Tuna, Heartbreaker, and Flying Toaster
showed out-front speed and tactics in the early
going of this regatta.
Sunday the forecast was for fifteen to
twenty-five. The positioning on the course
consisted of two or three lead boats with a
pack of aggressive boats hot on their heels.
Missing a puff or poor sail handling proved
costly on a small course with such fast boats.
In the final race the wind was stiff and
the boats were flying. Five or more boats crashed
the finish line in one of the nicest puffs of the
day with Woody on the inside for a bullet.

505 Worlds
The 505 Class is holding its world
championships in Hyannis MA. Conditions have
been outstanding, often featuring 20 knots of
breeze sail-fast planing conditions.
After four of the scheduled seven races
the Trotman/Mills team lead the series with 19.00
points with the Zani/Alarie team close behind
with 23.00 points. Upton-Brown/Mitchell are
third overall with 35.40 points, Saugmann/Ramsbaek
are currently fourth with 48.70 points and
Hunt/Beloe established in fifth place
with 73.70 points.

Star Worlds
The Star class, which will again
participate in the Olympic sailing regatta, has
its top sailors in Portoroz Slovenia.
So far only 1 race has been sailed. Tuesday
major wind shifts and numerous premature starters
combined to make for no race after 7 attempts at
getting started.
In Monday's completed Race 1 Canadian
Ross McDonald was victorious. Down in 13th is
American Star boat ace Marc Reynolds. Obviously
the regatta is far from decided.

Etchell 22 Worlds-
This class is sailing its world
championships in Marblehead Mass. Among
the attendees are Americas Cup winners:
Conner, Coutts and Bertrand.
This regatta has been shaped by a
shifty and unpredictable breeze. Local
knowledge has not been the currency of the
realm.
An example of this occured in
yesterday's race. Local knowledge pointed
to the right side of the course. Past Etchells
world champion Dave Curtis stayed right and was
in 47 place at the top mark. Dennis Conner
got a 71st for staying right.
After 3 races the top 3 teams are:
1 CAN Knuelman/Sustronk/Harvey 1-4-13 18 points
2 USA Duncan/Blackwell/Barton 25-2-1 28
3 USA Curtis/Iverson/Rosenberg 5-6-23 34
Many of the teams have had a deep finish
already and can't afford another one. It seems
as though consistency will play a large role
in figuring the regatta winner.
