Farr 40 World Championships: Last Day Reversal
Going into the final day of racing at the Farr 40 world
championships it seemed as though the contest for 1st prize was
a two boat race. The contest looked to be between defending
champion Barking Mad and Italian entry Mascalzone. They were level
with 25 points. 8 points from them in 3rd was Samba Pa Ti.
The final day of the championship saw two races sailed. In
the first race it was obvious that to make up 8 points John Kilroy's
Samba Pa Ti needed a win. That is exactly what they got. 4th was
Barking Mad with Mascalzone 9th. This race still left Barking Mad
with a 4 point lead. Another tie had developed, but this time for
2nd.
Over 20 knots of wind greeted the fleet for race 2. At the
first windward mark, Barking Mad had to make a 360-degree penalty
turn. This dropped them from 8th to 17th.
With Barking Mad at the back of the pack two 40's still
contended. On the downwind leg Samba Pa Ti passed Mascalzone. This
pass decided the 2nd class World Championship.
Featured Brokerage: C&C 40
This week we present a brief look at a boat from our
extensive list of brokered sailboats. The entire list is located at:
http://www.torresen.com/broker.htm
This weeks featured boat is a fine example of rare type of
boat for our times. Hedon is a 1982 C&C 40 aft cabin version.
Designed to win races and be a comfortable cruising boat Hedon will
still serve both purposes.
Measuring in at 39 feet 7 inches with a beam of 12 feet
8 inches Hedon is well proportioned. A 7-foot draft makes most
venues attainable.
Hedon has convenient features such as roller furling and
cockpit awning. If you want to race and cruise Hedon should be on
your list of boats.

Sailing Previews
Sydney Harbor Olympic Classes Regatta
The 2000 Summer Olympics are just over one year away from
starting (366 days). With that countdown in mind the US Sailing
team will compete in the Sydney Harbor Regatta 18 to 26 September.
An important feature of this regatta is that in addition
to sailing on the same waters to be used for the Olympic regatta,
the sailors will stay in the Athlete's village. As with the
actual games only one entry per country will be allowed.
The US Sailing team will have an entry in each of the
9 classes.
Both the Finn and Europe classes will be represented by 1999
Pre Olympic Trials winners. Sailing the Finn will be Darrel Peck,
while Meg Gaillard will sail in the Europe dinghy class.
The men's 470 team will be Paul Foerster and Bob Merrick.
The women's 470 duo will be Louise Van Voorhis and Tracy Hayley.
The brother team of Johnathan and Charlie McKee will sail
the 49er skiff.
Mark Mendeblatt of St. Petersburg FL is fresh off a Pan Am
games win and will look to finish at the top of the Laser fleet.
There will be both a Men's Mistrals board sailor (Mike
Gebhardt) and a women's rep Lanee Butler.
The two keel boat classes will be filled by:
Jeff Madrigall/Craig Healey/Hartwell Jordan in the Soling
and Mark Reynolds/Phil Trinter Star.
The Tornado catamaran slot will be filled by John Lovell
and Charlie Ogletree.
Torresen Sailing Site will provide coverage in Sailing Daily.
Rolex Women's International Keelboat Championship
Ida Lewis Yacht Club of Newport Rhode Island will host this
regatta 19-25 September.
Sailed biennially since 1985 teams of women sailors will look
to sail 10 races in 5 days. As always the outcome of racing is
uncertain, but we do know a new champion will be crowned. Defending
champion Betsy Alison was unable to make time to sail the regatta.
In Alison's absence other notable sailors will try to take
the regatta title. Frenchwoman Christine Brian will attempt to add
the Rolex title to her previously won ISAF Women's World Keelboat
Championship. Canadian Felicity Clark will attempt to improve upon
her 7th place finish in 1997.
Perhaps the top host country team will be Viki Sodaro's
California based team. This team placed 4th in 1997.
Representing the Torresen Sailing Site's home waters will
be Laurie Poppen and teammates sailing Ken. This team includes:
Sarah Buckley of Lake Forest, Ill. Sue Olness of Wayzata, Minn,
Cynthia Best of Berkley, Mich. Laurie Henderson of Grosse Pointe, Mich and
Sandi Svoboda of Detroit, Mich.
Poppen's team, perhaps better known as 'Box Lunch' has
sailed several prepatory events. Their first time sailing as a team
they finished 2nd at the Detroit NOOD regatta. Next up was the Sheridan
Shore Race Weekend resulting in a 3rd place. Finally they finished on
top with their first overall first in the Verve Cup One Design weekend.
Although a small regatta in numbers, the team sailed in tough
heavy air conditions.
A total of 25 teams are registered of the Rolex. Torresen
Sailing Site will provide coverage of this event. The official
regatta website is located at:

Trans Erie Sees New Record
Note: Information for this article courtesy of Great
Lakes Current. This free publication covering Great Lakes Sailing
is available in the Torresen Marine Ships Store.
20 & 21 August were the dates of the 1999 Trans Erie Yacht
Race. 36 boats split amongst PHRF, MORC and Doublehanded divisions
were on the line.
This year the fleet sailed from Grosse Ile MI to Erie PA.
This is the reverse direction from previous years. 140 miles is the
course distance.
Although light air was present for the start, 15-20 knots of
breeze came by nightfall. This gave the fleet premium reaching
conditions. Tactics were straight forward with the north side of
the rhumb line having steadier breeze.
Dr. Robert Coleman's Soverel 39 Hellion used these conditions
to set a new elapsed time record of 21 hours 23 minutes and 36 seconds.
Being first to finish did not prove out when corrected times were
calculated.
Overall and PHRF winner was Cary On an Ericson 32. Winning
the MORC class was the S2 7.9 Gauntlet this despite sailing with a
broken rudder for the last 35 miles.
The Doublehanded division winner was Jack Wood's Pearson 30
L'Cheim.
Plans for the 2000 Trans Erie include reversing the
course and sailing from Erie to Grosse Ile. The race website
is at: www.transerie.com.
Anchorage Cup
Saturday saw the sailing of the annual Anchorage Cup.
Starting in Grand Haven MI the fleet planned to sail the complete
course to Holland MI. However, light air prompted race officials
to sail a shortened course finishing at Port Sheldon.
The sailing was challenging. The fleet flew kites in
light air. Jibing angles were a tough call. Jibing offshore
had all appearances of being favored. However, jibing to the
shore and getting right to the beach paid big for several boats.
First spinnaker class boat to finish was the One Design 35
Pronto in 2 hours 25 minutes. Pronto also corrected out to 1st
overall in the Spinnaker fleet. Other Spinnaker division winners
were: Houqua, Vamoose, Atropos, Mega and Rally Back.
The Jib and Main division also saw a single boat sweep
first to finish and first overall honors. In this case it was
the S2 7.9 Second Wind. Other Jib and Main division winners were:
Sweet Mary, Paradigm, Alchemist, Quick a Minute and Optima.
